Match report Skipper Danny Williams will look for improvement from his new look Thatcham side after their opening Thames Valley Division One fixture against newly promoted Cove petered out to a tame draw.
Despite the personnel changes and the unseasonably bitter wind, the day started in familiar fashion for Thatcham as overseas star Ali Naqvi (4 for 36) removed both Cove openers in a devastating early burst. Debutant Tim Burnett was unlucky not to join Naqvi amongst the wickets, none more so than when Dan Stone shelled a difficult slip chance, but despite several Cove players getting starts, Thatcham looked to be in control. Chris Bird (5 for 58) took regular wickets, with Stone atoning for his earlier error with 3 fine slip catches, but the visitors lower order worked hard and were eventually dismissed for a modest, but potentially tricky 164.
With a relatively inexperienced batting line-up, it was vital that Thatcham started positively but it was Cove who were soon in the driving seat as the unerringly accurate Audsley (3 for 45) ripped through the Thatcham top order. At 14-4, a potential embarrassment was on the cards and it was left to Naqvi and Chris Rochfort to rebuild. The pair looked resolute in defence and with the preservation of wickets their principal task, an ever-rising run rate made victory look increasingly unlikely. Naqvi’s dismissal for 45 put an end to any lingering hopes of a late run chase, but Rochfort’s fine 54 and Steve Bartholomew’s 23 not out ensured the spoils were shared.
In what is likely to be a season of consolidation for Thatcham, Williams will take positives from a solid bowling performance and will look to build on an encouraging, if not victorious, start to the season.
