Match report Thatcham’s search for their first win of the season ended in remarkable fashion on Saturday as the final pair of John Williams and Chris Bird secured a stunning last ball victory against Division 1 newcomers Windsor.
Chasing 193, Thatcham had stuttered to 75 for 5 before Robb Fraser and Daniel Stone’s 50 run partnership provided a glimmer of hope. But Fraser’s departure for 22 to the impressive Vandermerwe (4-63) saw the momentum shift back to Windsor, and when Stone was finally dismissed for an outstanding 89, Thatcham’s slim chance of victory had seemingly gone with him.
With just one wicket in hand, Thatcham still required an improbable 32 runs from the final 12 deliveries as Windsor understandably went for all out attack in their quest for victory. Nichols bowled an aggressive penultimate over but whilst most expected Williams to doggedly battle for survival, he decided on all out attack himself to smash 16 crucial runs.
Williams’ exploits undoubtedly gave Thatcham a boost, but with 16 still required from the final over, a win for the home side still seemed the least likely result.
Bird however had other ideas and he followed Williams’ example to hit 12 off the first 5 deliveries and put Thatcham firmly back in contention. With a single delivery remaining, Thatcham were just one boundary away from a remarkable victory and Bird didn’t disappoint, despatching the final ball high over long on for six memorable runs and a crucial first win of the season.

Earlier, Thatcham had produced another solid bowling display with Ali Naqvi (3-45) and the returning Nick Bishop (1-31) the pick of the attack. Windsor had batted steadily throughout with Nichols (33) and Weston (34) providing the runs, but a generally solid fielding display had helped keep the visitors within reach.
