High Wycombe II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 03 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs

Match report Thatcham again followed a victory with a disappointing defeat away at High Wycombe II on Saturday.

The home chose to bat and made the most of a very flat wicket, quick outfield and short boundary. Lance (72) and Stevens (60) played themselves in steadily before upping the rate as they passed their century stand in the 28th over. They got to 131 when John Williams (1-60) found the edge of Stevens bat.
The situation allowed Gitsham to be positive from the start and although Chris Bird dismissed Lance thanks to a fine stumping from Chris Rochfort it looked like Wycombe would reach a total in excess of 250.
Ali Naqvi and Bird bowled very well though and although runs didn’t dry up they did manage to slow the rate slightly. Gitsham fell for 58 and Naqvi took a second wicket but Sketchley scored a breezy 26 as the hosts reached 240-4 from their 52 overs. Naqvi took 2-77 but Bird was the pick of the attack with 1-58 from 16 overs.

Wycombe went with the old ball and spin at the start of the Thatcham innings and as so often is the case the batsmen struggled to make a positive start. Sketchley removed Paul Jenkins and Simon Rider in identical fashion and when Dan Stone found himself yards up the wicket Russell had the simple task of removing the bails and Thatcham were 24-3 from 11 overs.
Naqvi and Matt Denness- returning from the wilderness- rebuilt the innings somewhat but after looking in good touch Denness went lbw to Sketchley for 17.
Ed Armstrong (15) showed some promise on debut as he added 44 with Naqvi but there were effectively two games taking place. When Naqvi was on strike batting looked easy and as long as he was Thatcham were still in with a good chance, at the other end no one was able to get going or at least rotate the strike for Naqvi.
Sean Huckins managed 15 but as the last ten overs were reached Thatcham needed 92. Naqvi reached his 100 with his third six as the target came down to 54 off five when he finally fell to the excellent Sketchley for 118. Williams fell after hitting a four and six so it was left to the last pair of Chris Bird and Robb Fraser to try to reach 200 and gain maximum points.
This was done easily and with 33 needed from 13 balls- and memories of their win against Windsor earlier in the season- Fraser rather rashly went for a big shot and was bowled to give Wycombe victory with two overs left. Sketchley (5-68) and Gitsham (4-58) did all the damage and Thatcham were left to rue a missed opportunity.
