Maidenhead & Bray v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 24 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham settled for second best as they drew their mustn’t lose game away at bottom club Maidenhead & Bray on Saturday.
Having lost the toss and been asked to field Ali Naqvi made his usual early breakthrough but Thatcham rather let things drift from that point as some sloppy fielding and indifferent bowling helped Arjan and Adin add 59 in nine overs. Naqvi struck again but runs continued to flow until Chris Bird came on and helped Thatcham gain a measure of control.
Naqvi returned as Bird swapped ends as they started to drag Thatcham back into the game. Naqvi held on to two sharp slip catches off Bird and Jamie Young took a fine one off Naqvi at fine leg but with 15 overs left the home side looked likely to reach 300 as they were 189-5.
However, Bird removed Arjan for 94 and bowled Khan first ball and when Naqvi struck again it was suddenly 203-8 with ten to go. Skipper Bezuidenhout batted very well though, ensuring his side got through the overs before holing out in the final over for 46. Bird then took his fifth wicket as Maidenhead were dismissed for 249. Naqvi took his now customary five for, 5-103 from 22 overs, but Bird was the star performer with 5-66 from 17.

A good track and fast outfield meant Thatcham approached the target with some confidence but they soon made their usual start as they slipped to 9-2 from 7 overs as Bray started with the old, very soft, ball.
Naqvi was soon into his stride though, finding the boundary with ease and looking in imperious form. Paul Jenkins seemed to gain confidence from this and was soon matching Naqvi’s strokeplay, particularly through midwicket. They’d added 72 in 15 overs when Naqvi smashed a long hop straight to midwicket and was gone for 48.
Jenkins and Tom Mahoney consolidated before the opener finally fell for a composed 37. Rishton came and went and as the chance of victory drifted away from Thatcham it was imperative they didn’t lose the game.
Young and Mahoney stayed positive but the latter’s excellent contribution ended on 42 as he mishit to mid off. The old man of the side, Robb Fraser, then joined Young with nine overs left and needing only to survive. They comfortably got through six of them but then Bashir removed Young for 26 and Fraser fell to the last ball of the 46th over leaving two to go.
John Williams and Bird survived comfortably for 11 balls to ensure the draw but Bird was lbw to the last ball to give Maidenhead what could be a vital extra point in the upcoming relegation battle, with Thatcham needing some much improved performances if they are to stay in Thames Valley One next season.
