Match report Disappointing is the cleanest word to use to describe Thatcham II’s performance in their opening league game of 2010.

Johnson (35) and Robinson (46) made a steady start against some good bowling from Graham Squire and Tim Mahoney, whose age is now almost equal to the rest of the team combined. A fine run out from Felix Hartley- Russell broke the partnership and then Mahoney took a deserved wicket before hobbling out of the attack on his Zimmer frame.
All Thatcham bowlers performed creditably but with wickets in hand Henley were able to accelerate a little and reach 190-7 in their 52 overs, with Palmer’s 41 the other major contribution. Eddie Wylie produced a herculean effort as he bowled 16 overs- more than the whole of last season’s total- on the trot to take 3-60, with good support from Tim Mahoney 1-21, Squire 1-30 and a good effort at the end from Tom Mahoney with 1-20.

The less said about Thatcham’s reply the better. Robb Fraser started brightly but left too quickly and set the trend for the innings by giving it away. He was soon followed by captain Cottingham. Matt Denness looked good for 14 before being dismissed by a decent ball from Johnson. Tom Mahoney played a lone hand, eventually falling for 28 but the rest fell in disappointing fashion as fielders were found with unerring accuracy.
Jack Young followed up an excellent keeping display with some defiance down the order but the example wasn’t followed as Thatcham were dismissed for 101. Johnson bowled accurately and ended with figures of 8-31, a fine effort but one which needed much help from Thatcham’s batsman. Lessons will need to learned. History tells us they probably won’t be....
