Match report Thatcham II’s home game with Marlow Park was notable only for it being Peter Edgcombe’s final one for the club. After 13 years service Peter is retiring back to his West Country roots.

In a game shortened to 78 and then 74 overs the toss was vital, Marlow Park won it so Thatcham had to bat. Captain Gavin McDonald, back from his temporary Australian exile, started positively but fell for 9. Martin Keep (14) and Josh Winfield (24) continued in the same vein, playing some pleasant strokes before both fell in similar fashion, beaten by the slowness of the wicket.
Matt Denness (24) and Jack Young (15) took the score towards 100 but when they went in quick succession Thatcham were 105-6 off 20 overs. However, the lower order were not phased and the positive intent of the whole innings continued as Nick Bishop (19) and Edgcombe, top scoring with 33, continued the attack. Again, they both fell within a few runs of each other but Nick Monger, with a bright and breezy 32 not out, and Perry Moore (13no) ensured Thatcham were able to declare at 37 overs on 202-8, leaving them the same number to try to bowl Marlow out.

Daniel Stephenson (1-28) struck in his second over, bowling Lambard for 0 and when Edgcombe had Burden miraculously caught by Keep the home side sniffed a chance of victory. Way looked to attack but the Marlow captain Hawkins decided a draw was the only option open to his side and dropped anchor.
Edgcombe bowled Way for 17 but Barlow came in with the same intent as his captain and on the slow, but reliable wicket the desire to simply not get out made it very difficult for the Thatcham bowlers. A couple of half chances went begging and Monger (1-5) completed a good all round game by dismissing Barlow (28) with the aid of a fine catch from Denness.
With the overs running out all that was left was to see if Edgcombe could sign off with a couple of wickets but it wasn’t to be. He finished with 2-34 from twelve overs of typical accuracy and movement, hinting that, even at his advanced years, retirement may be premature….
