Cove III v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Thatcham II recorded their first league win of the season by comprehensively beating second placed Cove III by 5 wickets.

Thatcham II travelled to Cove with high expectation of recording their first victory due to the strong opening bowling attack of Andrews and Burnett and on winning the toss Iain Cottingham had no hesitation in inserting their hosts into bat. The decision to field first had immediate rewards as Andrews cleaned bowled Cove’s opening bat with his second delivery, bringing skipper Scannell to the crease who immediately decided to take the attack to Thatcham hitting 2 fours in the remaining 4 deliveries of the first over. Burnett also bowling with pace and accuracy troubled both batsman. Scannell then tried another positive shot against Burnett which bounced higher that expected and Monger took a sharp chance and point.
By this time the Cove batsman were solely concentrating on survival against the potent strike force of Burnett and Andrews and after 14 overs Cove were 30 for 3. After Andrews 7 overs Tim Mahoney was brought into the attack who proceeded to strangle one end bowling 7 overs for 6 runs whilst Burnett continued to bowl with accuracy until tiring after 12 overs.
Perry Moore replaced him and took 2 for 19 off 10 overs. Once allowed to do so Andrews was brought back into the attack and immediately struck, finishing his spell 14 overs with 5 for 41, a super effort from the 16 year old, at this stage Cove were 86-9. Thereafter senior players Ingram and Randall played sensibly until Burnett 3-33 off 13 overs returned to bowl Randall, Cove had limped to 114 all out off 44.3 overs, a super performance in the field with the only slight blemish being the 28 extras conceded.

At tea Thatcham were confident of knocking off the required runs at just over 2 runs per over. Opening with the new ball, Cove broke through as opener Cottingham fell to an LBW decision, but Jack Young joined Kieran Lynch and both played positively until Lynch was caught at slip for 14, bringing Denness to the crease.
Jack Young played with extreme confidence and maturity until he was caught in the gully for a fine 25. Thatcham II were scoring at 5 over, with Denness mixing his usual careful defence while capitalising on any bad balls.
A couple of cheap wickets fell within sight of victory, so it was left to Monger 7no and Denness 48 no to hit the winning runs in the 22 over, a comprehensive 5 wicket victory built upon the new ball attack of Andrews and Burnett and an improved fielding performance.
