Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Henley III on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 158 runs

Match report Thatcham II were outplayed by a technically superior Henley III in their home TVL 4B fixture, loosing by a comprehensive margin of 158 runs. On winning the toss, Thatcham invited Henley the first use of their excellent home track, Palmer and Johnson immediately feeling at home against the new ball attack of Burnett and Andrews, runs flowed until the introduction of veteran Mahoney who had Johnson (32) caught at midwicket by Cottingham. With the economical Andrews being replaced by Taylor, who bowled Francis, however after Oldershaw survived a confident catch behind off Mahoney opener Palmer dropped anchor, Mahoney wasn’t to be denied having Oldershaw caught behind by Bird. Veteran Kendrick decided to play his shots across the fast outfield until a mix up resulted in the run out of Palmer for 48. Cottingham then introduced Squire who dismissed 2 Henley batsman cheaply, at 180-6 with 9 overs remaining Thatcham had high hopes of dismissing Henley for less than 225, however 15 year old Nugent had other ideas striking the tiring Thatcham bowlers to all parts of Brownsfield for a remarkably mature 50 off 37 balls, supported well by other youngster Neville, leaving Denission to declare at 278-8 off 50 overs.

At tea, Cottingham decided to open with the attacking partnership of Winfield and Andrews, however Thatcham’s batsman had no answer to the accuracy of Henley’s bowlers of Fitzpayne and Johnson using the old ball slumping to 25-5, with veterans Harland, Denness and Bird dismissed for 1 run between them. Cottingham was joined at the crease by Squire who immediately took the attack to Henley dispatching Henley’s bowlers to all parts of the ground, forcing Henley skipper Denisson to take the new ball, which then went quicker and faster to the boundary off Squire’s bat. Squire duly completed his maiden league 50 with another well struck boundary when with the partnership of 80, Nugent had a tired (result of an overnight flight from Cape Town) Cottingham 19 trapped LBW, the next over Squire 52 was bowled by Denission and Thatcham’s innings subsided to 120 all out off 31 overs, with 9 Thatcham batsman contributing only 14 runs. Nugent collected an impressive 3-9 on his 3rd team debut with his batting exploits a name for the future. For Thatcham II the result leaves them in the bottom 2 with the realisation that a combination of form, ability and lady luck will need to improve significantly in their remaining 8 league games if a second successive relegation is to be avoided.
