Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Maidenhead & Bray II on Sat 24 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Thatcham Town’s 2nd XI went down by 5 wickets to table topping Maidenhead & Bray 2s in an entertaining clash at Brownsfield on Saturday.
With the home side looking to climb out of the relegation zone, Thatcham won the toss and elected to bat on a track that looked like it might offer early assistance but would hopefully prove true once the shine had gone off the new ball.
This proved to be the case as openers Simon Rider and Josh Winfield combined judicious shot selection with caution to frustrate Bray’s experienced opening attack of Coyne and Qureshi.
Bowling changes saw no reward for the visitors and the Thatcham pair frustrated them further with excellent running between the wickets. Rider worked the ball well into the gaps and got the most out of his younger partners athleticism, whilst Winfield used his large stride to maximum effect with some fine driving.
The fifty partnership was posted in the 16th over and the century mark in the 26th without any sign that either batsmen would be shifted from the crease until Winfield eventually mis-timed another drive and was caught by Coyne for a fine 70, including nine boundaries and a five, with the total on 153.
Thatcham looked to maintain the tempo with an early declaration in mind and Rider sacrificed personal glory to help the cause when he finally perished for 93 in the 45th over, also scoring nine ‘fours’.
A useful Jack Andrews cameo of 14 was bolstered by a quick-fire 30 unbeaten partnership between Matt Denness (15 not out) and Kieran Lynch (20 not out) allowed Thatcham to declare on 223 for 4 from fifty overs, leaving Maidenhead the same amount to chase the total down.
After tea, Thatcham took the new ball and gained early success with Andrews (2 for 43) rapid opening stint from a shortened run accounting for Viljoen and Coyne with only 29 on the board, Tim Mahoney proving to be the perfect counter at the other end, giving the visiting batsmen little to hit.
Raja and Van Niekerk looked to consolidate but Thatcham’s excellent fielding backed up tight bowling and whilst wickets were at a premium, things remained very much in the balance throughout.
Having seen Winfield replace Andrews at the top end for a quick four over last and Nick Bishop run through a quick six over stint in miserly fashion, the Maidenhead batsmen looked to get after Matt Taylor and Nick Monger.
Monger (1 for 31) quickly removed Raja to a fine running catch at mid-off and Taylor, as ever, bowled a nagging line and length to restrict Van Niekerk to singles as the South African was made to work hard for his runs.
The visitors needed to pick up the pace and the match changing innings came from Hewitt who looked to dominate from the start and unleashed a series of cleanly hit blows through the off-side to relieve the pressure and force Thatcham to look to change their bowlers at regular intervals in attempt to make the necessary break through.
Thatcham responded well with the returning Bishop accounting for Hewitt for a match winning 65 and Mahoney disposing of the tiring Van Niekerk for a solid 68, Maidenhead reduced to 194 for 5, still needing 30 runs for victory off 7 overs.
Bishop (1 for 32) and Mahoney worked hard to keep the pressure up however Qureshi (16 not out) and Ball (17 not out) saw Maidenhead to victory with two overs to spare. Thatcham can be pleased with both their 12 point haul against a useful opposition and their continuing improved form, which they will look to take into this week’s crucial visit to bottom of the table Marlow Park.
