Royal Ascot v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 25 Jun 2005 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 5 wickets

Match report An experienced Thatcham 2nd XI maintained their challenge at top of the Division 3b with their first away win of the season with a 5 wicket defeat of Royal Ascot 1, skipper Jamie Fisher lost the toss and Ascot chose to bat on what looked like a slow wicket.
Ascot openers made watchful progress against the new ball partnership of J. Bishop and Fisher, with South African Hutcheson despatching anything loose to the boundary. However, Bishop was now bowling with great control and in the 12 over induced an edge of the dangerous South African with Stewart duly taking the catch standing up.

Bishop was now becoming unplayable as he was in the zone with his him bowling 8 maidens on the trot and picking up a further 3 wickets, a spell of 16-9-22-4. At the other end Fisher was replaced by Mahoney and he used all of his experience and guile to bowl a 21 overs for 42 runs without luck, taking the pace of the ball.

Moore replaced the tiring Bishop and proceeded to pick up 3 wickets as Ascot chased late runs with Wiggett 33 showing any resistance to the control of Thatcham’s bowling attack, Ascot closed their innings at 156-8 off 52 overs.

After tea Thatcham openers Bird and Cottingham were like Ascot watchful against the opening attack of Ascot, with Ascot deploying the same tactics as Thatcham by taking the pace off the ball on the slow wicket. An opening partnership of 51 saw the dismissal of Bird for a fine 34, with the light fading the introduction of Hutcheson caused a few alarms for the Thatcham batsman, yorking Cottingham for 32, which proceeded 3 quick wickets.

The experienced pairing of Fisher and Beaumont then proceeded to rebuild the innings with both watchful in defence but aggressive against anything off line, with 25 neaded in the last 5 overs Beaumont was dismissed for a fine 26 the highlight being a a 6 over deep mid wicket. With Moore 9 not out joining the impressive Fisher they proceeded to knock off the winning runs with 7 balls to spare with Fisher finishing on 42 not out taking his season’s average to 289!

Thatcham now lie in 4th place 10 points behind 2nd placed Falkland and visit of top of the table Beconsfield 2nd to Brownsfield on Saturday.
