Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Beaconsfield 2nd XI on Sat 02 Jul 2005 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets

Match report An ageing Thatcham 2nd XI were outclassed by top of the table Beaconsfield by 6 wickets, on a cloudy and relatively humid day Beaconsfield had no hesitation of inserting Thatcham on a typically true looking Thatcham wicket.
Thatcham openers Cottingham and Gadsden made watchful progress against the new ball sponsored by Melo Associates, with Gadsden 44 playing a more attacking role of their opening partnership of 65 with anything short being deposited to the boundary until Sullivan made the breakthrough.

The continuing accuracy of Beaconsfield allied with some variable bounce as meant that runs were proving hard to come by, Thatcham had wickets in hand to post a score in excess of 200 from the final 15 overs but Beaconsfield stuck at their task as wickets steadily fell as Beaumont, Huckins, Fisher and Taylor all tried to accelerate the scoring, with Cottingham 61 accumulating steadily, eventually Thatcham closed on an under par 182-8 off their allotted 52 overs.

After tea Thatcham knew that early wickets were essential if they were to put Beaconsfield under pressure, with Bishop duly striking in the 7th over, bring Australian Pratt to the wicket, who proceeded to play a watchful innings, with Fisher bowling with pace a further 2 wickets fell, 2 diving catches from Huckins and Fisher off his own bowling. At 43-3 Thatcham felt that the dismissal of either Farnon or Pratt would open the door to Beaconsfield's lower order. Unfortunately Pratt proceeded to give the watching crowd a master class in how to bat on a surface not conducive to stroke play, demonstrating why he plays grade cricket in Victoria, with his partner Farnon happy to play a supporting role as Pratt used his feet to the spin of Moore and Sabberton, with powerful and elegant strokes through the leg side. With 20 win Bishop finally broke the partnership, it was left to Pratt 99no to hit the winning runs, as Thatcham were left to reflect that their ageing side (average age 40) was no match for the class of Pratt aged 21.

Thatcham still lie in 4th place 20 points behind 2nd placed Falkland with
bottom of table Marlow 2nd visiting Brownsfield on Saturday.
