Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Marlow on Sat 07 May 2005 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 106 runs
Match report
Thatcham’s season got off to the worst possible start as they were soundly beaten by a strong Marlow side at Brownsfield on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat and things started off in the best possible way for the home side as Bradman Ediriweera struck with the very first ball of the innings tempting Wrighton outside the off stick and Jim Ettridge took a fine catch at 2nd slip as the Marlow opener departed for a golden duck. That however was Thatcham’s only success for a while as Bucks opener Graham Paskins, together with Will Gidman put on 161, courtesy of some generous Thatcham catching, Gidman put down 5 times on his way to 56, before the spin of Duncan Johnson ended his stay, Ettridge again with the safe hands. Johnson struck again 2 balls later, Duddington got an inside edge to a quicker delivery and Chris Wright took a good catch, Marlow 163-4 through 40 overs. Andy Harland then bowled Hudson for 7 and Thatcham sniffed a chance to keep the visitors to a gettable score, but Pakistani overseas ace Jawed Hamid Haq had other ideas and took the game away from Thatcham with a blistering innings of 68 in double quick time. Paskins, meanwhile had gone about his business quietly and complied 108 before he too was bowled by Harland, who then proceeded to see Haq dropped 3 times in the same over as Thatcham leaked runs at the death to leave Marlow on 254-5 from their 52 overs.
Ediriweera was the pick of the home attack with 1-35 from 13 overs, but both Harland and Johnson did a great job of getting their side back in the game before the slack fielding display took it away again and both bowlers figures suffered and were not indicative of what a good job they did, Harland finishing with 2-60 from 8 overs and Johnson 2-68 from 12.
Thatcham took the run chase on though, and with a good track and a quick outfield, were confident that 254 could be overhauled. Ediriweera and Ettridge put on 25 before the latter was run out for 16, just the start the home side didn’t need. Danny Stone followed shortly after, bowled by Haq for 2 and then Thomas took centre stage in a blistering spell of 19 overs, 7-66 as he tore through the Thatcham batting, clean bowling 5 of his victims.
Ediriweera was first to go for 31, caught at cover, before Chris Wright and Duncan Johnson staged a spirited recovery, putting on 63. Thomas however had other ideas, as he bowled Wright for 18 and then took out Matt Denness and Robb Fraser in quick succession. Johnson had got to 55, hitting twelve 4’s, before a change of attack from Thomas bought about his downfall, the very first ball round the wicket cleaned the Thatcham skipper up and signalled the beginning of what was to be a very quick end.
Andy Harland was run out for 1, Nick Bishop bowled for 0 and Thomas then clean bowled Pete Edgcombe for 4 to send Thatcham 148 all out and a defeat by 109 runs.
Haq gave Thomas superb support as he sent down 18 overs, 8 of which were maidens, to finish with 1-24.
The home side were left to reflect on a poor fielding performance which gifted Marlow at least 75 more runs than they should have got and a batting display in which shot selection left a big question mark, although you can take nothing away from Thomas, in what was a super spell of medium quick bowling.
