Match report Thatcham finally got off the mark at the 6th attempt and collected a maximum 25 point haul courtesy of a 54 run beating of High Wycombe 2’s on Saturday at Brownsfield.

On a scorching day, Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first and backing his side to score quick runs leaving enough overs to bowl the opposition out for a 25 point win. Brad Ediriweera and Phil Makings opened up for the home side and reached 35 before Makings drove loosely at Robinson and was caught behind for 8. Daniel Stone joined Ediriweera in the middle and they added 52 before Stone fell in identical fashion, this time off the bowling of Downing for 16. That was to be Wycombe’s last success however as Chris Wright and Ediriweera then put together a partnership of 190 runs in 26 overs with both players despatching the visitors attack to all parts. Ediriweera, who was dropped twice before reaching 50, played faultlessly thereafter as he reached 151 not out, with 128 runs coming in boundaries as he hit 28 4’s and 2 6’s and Wright finished on 81 not out, hitting 8 4’s and 5 6’s in a savage assault on the Wycombe attack. There are few better players than Wright at putting a bowling attack to the sword with a platform already in place and it’s an innings he can build on and hopefully go on to post some further big scores in the games ahead. Johnson declared the innings on 277-2 from 48 overs, giving his bowlers ample time in which to make the necessary inroads into the visiting batting.

Ediriweera, fresh from his big score took the new ball with Andy Harland and the breakthrough came courtesy of the Sri Lankan as he trapped Bird lbw for 8. Harland then got in on the act as Stevens edged to Johnson at 3rd slip without scoring and it was the perfect start with the visitors 12-2 early doors. Siddiq and N Robinson then put together a mini-revival, Robinson in particular looking in fine fettle as he drove Ediriweera for several fours before Harland got one to nip away and Chris Wright did the rest to send him back for 22. Johnson then turned to Chris Bird and himself to try and spin through the rest of the Wycombe order and it proved a good move as Bird suddenly found his form and rhythm and ripped the Wycombe middle order out.
Watkins was caught by Pete Edgcombe for 18, Guha fell lbw to the arm ball for 0 and then the important wicket of Siddiq who was brilliantly caught by Ediriweera at slip for 55 signalled the beginning of the end. Johnson took out Ashad, bowled for 13, P Robinson, caught by Bird for an entertaining 28 and then Russell-Thompson, well caught by Robb Fraser at short leg for 5. Only the dangerous Russell was left with his skipper Downing and when Wycombe got to 200 the danger was they would shut up shop for the 9 overs that remained, but fair play to them, they carried on playing shots and it was only when Russell was run out for 43 with the visitors on 223 that the win was secured in the 46th over and the 25 valuable points were Thatcham’s.

It was a fantastic performance from the Thatcham side with Bird and Johnson picking up 3 wickets apiece, but the pick of the attack was Andy Harland, who returned figures of 8 overs, 5 maidens, 2-15.

Thatcham entertain newly promoted Hampton Hill at Brownsfield on Saturday and will go in search of another 25 points to really kickstart their campaign and get moving up towards the right end of the table.
