Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Hampton Hill on Sat 25 Jun 2005 at 1.30pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
Thatcham suffered at the hands of the weather at Brownsfield on Saturday as the match was abandoned with the home side cruising to a 20 point victory against visitors Hampton Hill.
Under overcast skies Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and inserted the visitors and A.Butt came out all guns blazing in a fiery confrontation with Brad Ediriweera in which the Sri Lankan thought he had him caught behind off a snorting bouncer and then when he did appear to have his man, attempting another hook shot only to top edge to James Ettridge, no ball was the call from the umpire and Butt survived to take Ediriweera’s 5 overs for 54 runs and himself to a blistering half century until Andy Harland snared him with a slower ball, well caught by Pete Edgcombe at mid-on. With Thatcham needing to restore order to the proceedings Johnson turned to Nick Bishop and the off-spinner responded with a super spell of nagging, controlled off spin, giving the batsmen nothing to hit which then allowed Johnson himself to bowl in tandem with good variety. Wickets fell regularly to both bowlers and with Hampton Hill reduced to 136-9 the end looked nigh. But T.Butt and Ilias had other ideas and decided to enjoy themselves in a entertaining stand of 33, before the re-introduction of Ediriweera cleaned up Ilias for 12 with T.Butt unbeaten on 21, Hampton Hill bowled out for 169 in 46.3 overs.
Bishop bowled 18 overs without change, 12 off which were maidens and he finished with fine figures of 4-39 and Johnson offered good support with 4-52 from 15 overs.
Thatcham were confident of knocking the runs off in good time and had 53 overs in which to do so, although the Hampton Hill seamers, Aussie skipper Miles Harry and Rob Fullicks had other ideas and Jim Ettridge was soon on his way, nicking Harry through to
keeper Cadogan for 10. Chris Wright followed 4 runs later, bowled by a beauty from Harry for 3, but Johnson joined Ediriweera and the 2 form horses put on 50 before Ediriweera was caught down the leg side by Cadogan as he tried to pull a shorter delivery from Fullicks and departed for 38. Fullicks then took out Matt Denness caught behind down the leg side for 0 and at 90-4, Hampton Hill were interested, even though the drizzle began to take hold. Johnson calmly made his way to 46 and with Rakesh Patel offering good support with 12, the pair got Thatcham up to 112-4 with 59 runs needed and over 20 overs in which to finish the job. It was then that the umpires took the players from the field and play was deemed too dangerous to continue and the match was then abandoned approx 1 hour later.
It was frustrating for the home side, who were left to rue the fact that they picked up just 7 points compared to the visitors 8 points as Hampton Hill completed their innings picking up 6 batting points and had taken 4 Thatcham wickets for 2 bowling points.
After the way the game had gone it seemed a slight injustice.
Skipper Harry and Fullicks were the only 2 bowlers used, Harry, 16 overs 2-54 and Fullicks 15-2 overs 2-48.
Thatcham would like to thanks Melo Associates for sponsoring the match balls.
