Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Windsor on Sat 30 Jul 2005 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 6 wickets

Match report Thatcham moved up to 4th in TVL1 after a good win over bottom placed Windsor, where it appeared the only threat was the rain which wiped out the rest of the League program to benefit the West Berkshire side and help them gain a useful 13 points on the rest of the sides around them.

Windsor skipper Peter Thompson won the toss and elected to bat and and whilst Brad Ediriweera was keeping a lid on one end with an impressive accurate opening spell, fit again Andy Harland was tearing into the Windsor top order at the other, as he took out the dangerous Craig Bird for 8 and then followed that with the wickets of Huggins and Chorley in the same over to leave the visitors 26-3 through the first 10 overs. Wickets fell at regular intervals thereafter, South African Justin Granger was bowled neck and crop by a snorter from Ediriweera and Pete Edgcombe’s 1st over was a wicket maiden, the dangerous Mike Gould caught in the gully by Chris Bird for 13. Millman and Watkins recovered things a little, putting on 26 before Edgcombe dismissed Millman for 18 which bought in skipper Thompson, who with Watkins shared a stand of 27 before Nick Bishop had the latter caught at mid-wicket by Duncan Johnson for a hard hit 31. Thompson was batting beautifully and it was a mystery why he had come in at 8, and with just the tail of Mohindru, Woodward and Baumgartner for company he was always going to struggle to get his side up to a decent total. Looking to get as much strike as possible, he took on Pete Edgcombe for a quick single and perished, Edgcombe picking up and throwing the stumps down at mid-off to send the Windsor skipper back for 17. Ediriweera was re-introduced into the attack and blew away Woodward and Baumgartner in successive deliveries and Windsor were all out for 114 in the 40th over.
All four Thatcham bowlers used did a great job, Andy Harland picking up the top order with 3-38 from 8 overs, Pete Edgcombe taking 2-25 from 9, Nick Bishop 1-20 from a tidy 10 over spell and Ediriweera 3-24 from 13.4 overs doing what a strike bowler should and taking out the tail in quick time.

With a couple of rain breaks in the Windsor innings resulting in a loss of 4 overs per side, Thatcham had 52 overs to get the runs required, so the rate was never a problem, just the impending heavy showers and Brad Ediriweera and James Ettridge raced out of the blocks after tea, smashing 55 off the 1st ten overs without loss and then sharing a century opening stand in the 17th over, Ediriweera reaching a super 50 with some glorious cover drives and awesome pull shots and with Ettridge his usual calm self in support, it looked like a quick 10 wicket victory was on the cards. Wily spinner Mohindru struck though, bowling Ettridge for 29 and with the rain clearly visible and just 8 runs needed, skipper Duncan Johnson promoted himself up to 3 to try and strike the winning runs as quickly as possible. His first taste of the action though was to see the pacy Granger dismiss Ediriweera, who gloved a leg side short ball to Baumgartner behind the stumps for 66. Daniel Stone joined his captain, but lasted just 2 deliveries as Granger has him caught by Woodward without scoring and whilst all this was going on the clouds began to darken and Granger gained a few yards pace and he charged in at the new batsman Stephen Bird.
Bird lasted just 4 balls, Granger bowling him for no score and the home side had lost 4 wickets for 2 runs in just 18 balls and as Matt Denness walked out to join Johnson with his side at 109-4, the rain got heavier and the umpires took the players off the field and a few in the ground actually thought there would be no return, but approx 20 minutes later, the rain had stopped and play resumed, and with no chances being taken, Johnson hit Granger for successive 4’s to seal the victory and Thatcham finished 118-4 in the 23rd over and picked up 20 valuable points.

Thatcham would like to thank Melo Associates for sponsoring the match balls.

Thatcham now travel to League leaders Wokingham in a massive game on Saturday and they now lie just 34 points off top spot with 6 games still remaining.
