Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Marlow Park on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at 12.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 9 wickets

Match report Thatcham put the previous 2 weeks results well and truly behind them as they crushed relegated Marlow Park by 9 wickets at Brownsfield on Saturday to end the League season on a positive note.

With skipper Duncan Johnson, James Ettridge and Andy Harland returning to the side, Thatcham looked a much stronger outfit as they took the field after Marlow Park skipper Billy Shafaqat won the toss and elected to bat. In his last game for the Club, Sri Lankan Brad Ediriweera, whose contract is not being renewed by the Berkshire side, took the new ball with Andy Harland and a tight opening 10 overs only yielded 22 runs for the visitors. Ediriweera was replaced by Chris Bird and the left arm spinners first delivery accounted for the dangerous Ansari, caught by Ediriweera at slip for 5. Harland then trapped Weston lbw for 9 and the stubborn Salina caught at the wicket by Danny Stone for 8 to finish a tidy spell of 10 overs 2-20 with Johnson replacing him in the attack. Another immediate breakthrough resulted, the prize wicket of Mohammed Jawed, who smashed a wide long hop straight to Robb Fraser at extra cover and the Thatcham vice skipper made no mistake, clinging on to an absolute stinger above his head to send Jawed back for 28. The visitors were in trouble at 65-4 through 22 overs and it took an excellent century partnership between skipper Shafaqat and Mushtaq Khan to rescue their side, before Nick Bishop ended Shafaqat’s stay for a fine 48, well caught by keeper Stone. Bishop then snapped up Merry for 17 and with Robb Fraser putting in a fine spell of bowling in tandem with the off spinner, Marlow Park found runs hard to come by. Khan reached a fine 50, Fraser bowled Mahmood for 3 and Marlow Park ended their innings at 212-7 from the full 50 overs. Andy Harland returned the best figures with 2-20 from his 10, with Nick Bishop 2-47, Chris Bird 1-31, Robb Fraser 1-40 and Duncan Johnson 1-46 all
among the wickets for the home side.

With a lightning fast outfield and a good batting track, 212 was only a par score to chase and Brad Ediriweera and James Ettridge were soon into their stride. Ediriweera certainly wanted to entertain the crowd in his last knock in Thatcham colours as he smashed the ball to all parts reaching a very quick 50 as the home side posted 69 in the opening 10 overs to take the game away from Marlow Park. Ettridge was his usual assured, elegant self, timing the ball exquisitely through his favoured mid-wicket area and it looked as though the target would be reached without loss as Shafaqat switched his bowlers round to no avail, but just as Ediriweera was looking to sign off in perfect style with a century, he was lbw to Javed for a fine 70 and he departed to rapturous applause from all round the ground. Ettridge then took over and dominated a 106 run partnership with Danny Stone to win the game at a canter in the 26th over and he finished unbeaten on 92, showing how badly he has been missed. Stone was left unbeaten on 28, Thatcham 216-1 and 20 points to the good.
