Match report Thatcham bowed out of the Cockspur Cup at the 2nd round stage with a disappointing home defeat at the hands of Challow & Childrey on Sunday at Brownsfield.

Challow won the toss and elected to bat and Pete Edgcombe struck an early blow for the home side, Hughton edging to Chris Wright for 5. Nick Bishop then got his reward for a tight spell of controlled off spin, Owen Dimbylow bowled for 15. Will Clarke and Podbury then put together the decisive partnership of 82, before Podbury was run out for 35, with the score on 110-3 off 26 overs and with 20 overs still to bowl Thatcham were staring at a 200+ chase. A really good spell for Thatcham kept the visitors in check though as Duncan Johnson had Olly Dimbylow stumped for 4 and then Wixey caught by Robb Fraser for 2, before Chris Bird struck the all important blow, taking out skipper Clarke for a fine 74. The brakes were then applied, Johnson bowling Owen for 0 and then having Stevens caught by Nick Bishop for 7 and Andy Harland weighed in with the wicket of Slade, clean bowled for 3 as Challow finished their 45 overs at 174-9, which would have disappointed them at the tea interval. All the Thatcham bowlers did an excellent job, the trio of spinners Bishop 1-19 from 9, Bird 1-32 from 9 and Johnson 4-28 from 9 returning the outstanding figures.

Robb Fraser and Danny Stone took on the task in hand, but ultimately it was a bad display of batting from the home side which saw all top 5 get starts and not one of them go on to post a match winning score. Stone was first to fall, lbw to Slade for 12 and Fraser followed in the next over for 14, caught by Wixey off Owen. Chris Wright got to 20 and looked good before shot selection failed him and youngster Paul Jenkins looked positive for his 16 before he fell lbw to Owen Dimbylow. The middle order fell away though, Andy Harland was bowled for 4 and Mike Beaumont followed in similar fashion for 1 and when Johnson was also bowled by Hunter for 15 with the score on 100-7 from 27 overs, the writing looked on the wall. Steve Bartholomew and Chris Bird fell quickly and it was left to the last pair of Nick Bishop and Pete Edgcombe to restore some pride and very nearly win the game for the home side with a stand of 46. Bishop top scored with 23, making batting look easy, before he was unluckily run out leaving Edgcombe unbeaten on 19 and Thatcham all out for 146 and a loss by 28 runs.
