Hungerford v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday on Sun 31 Jul 2005 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 7 runs
Match report
Some fine bowling, on a helpful pitch, from both sides dominated the Border League meeting between Hungerford and Thatcham II on Sunday with the home side coming out winners by just seven runs.
Hungerford were soon in trouble as Nathan Redmond and Robb Fraser took three quick wickets at the top of the order, including the dangerous Wessels Hartslief, well caught at slip by Martin Keep. Paul Westbrook and David Bull then turned the innings round in a battling partnership of 68 in 20 overs.
Thatcham’s young bowling attack of Matt Taylor (12), Nick Monger (13) and Tom Mahoney (13) were all excellent on their senior debuts, showing great promise for the near future. However, it was Tom’s dad, the wily old campaigner Tim, who made the breakthrough, trapping Westbrook in front for 39. One over later Tom took his first senior wicket with a catch fittingly taken by his dad.
Geoff Haughton then added what turned out to be a crucial 19 runs having been put down on 0 before Mahoney snr (2-29) bowled him in his final over. Fraser then returned for his last two overs and immediately dismissed Bull for a hard fought 32 and then took two more wickets in his last over to finish with 5-18. Andy Burbidge and Ponsford added a couple of lusty blows to take the total to 140 before John Williams got amongst the wickets as the Hungerford skipper holed out at long off.
With 42 overs to get 141 it seemed Thatcham would just have to bat time to achieve victory but Keep decided, in his inimitable way, to try to finish things quickly. Boundaries flowed from his flashing blade from the start and he really dominated early proceedings. With Steve Bartholomew showing good judgement at the other end they put on 37 in six overs before Bartholomew’s patience ran out and he chipped a catch to cover.
Thatcham’s young middle order were unused to the extra pace of Jones, who bowled very well, and Haughton and the visitors were soon in deep trouble at 44-4. Fraser then joined Keep and the home side sensed that two more wickets would probably be enough to break the back of Thatcham’s batting.
Keep continued to play his shots, riding his luck at times, and he reached a well deserved fifty with his 11th four. However, he died by the sword he’d lived by, and was bowled by the persevering Jones (4-40) going for another big hit.
Burbidge replaced Haughton but John Williams dealt with him severely, hitting two sixes and a four in two overs as the hundred came up in the 20th over to leave 41 needed from 22. No problem with the run rate but Hartslief was now brought into the attack and he bowled with good pace and accuracy to give hope to the home side.
He proved too good for Williams, bowling him for 20, but as long as Fraser was in Thatcham looked likely winners. Nathan Redmond bravely took a couple of blows from the South African, but also managed to put him away to the boundary for vital runs. With just ten runs needed and four wickets in hand it needed something special from Hungerford and two wickets in Hartslief’s next over turned the match back in their favour, as he got an excellent Yorker through Fraser’s (32) defences and then bowled Kieran Lynch next ball. He sportingly dropped his pace to Matt Taylor and the youngster survived the over.
Redmond managed to scramble a couple more runs before Hartslief sent his off stump flying and then, with just 8 needed for victory, he struck Tim Mahoney in front of off stump to finish with 5-14 from 6.3 overs and give his side victory.
