Swindon 2nd XI v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday on Sun 07 Aug 2005 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 5 wickets

Match report Another excellent display from Thatcham II’s youngsters saw them win away st Swindon on Sunday. The visitors elected to field on winning the toss but it looked like they would have a large score to chase as Parobo played some scintillating strokes while also riding his luck and the score raced to 54 after nine overs.

A poor call backed up by a superb direct hit from 13 year old Jamie Young saw Parobo run out for 40 and two overs later the batters made the mistake of taking on the same fielder, this time his throw was well taken by Kieran Lynch behind the stumps and Furkins was gone for 0.

Tom Mahoney, another 13 year old, bowled a fine spell of four overs and was rewarded from his last ball when he bowled Read. John Williams (9-6-16-1) was giving an excellent display of left arm spin and he took the next wicket, setting Barrett up beautifully with three well flighted deliveries followed by a much quicker arm ball that crashed into the stumps.

71-4 became 75-5 when Nick Monger got in on the act with another direct hit to run out D’Souza. Swindon captain Kevin Thompson then held things together and eventually reached a well constructed fifty. Monger took his first senior wicket when he bowled McGinley for 6 and Young then took a fine catch to give Adam Bigwood (1-29) a wicket.

Robb Fraser returned to bowl Thompson for 57 and Nathan Redmond got amongst the wickets when Lynch took a decent catch to dismiss Whiting for 18. However, the home side would have been happy with a total of 189 from their 42 overs. Special mention must go to 12 year old Matt Taylor, 4-1-8-0, Monger, 13, 6-0-26-1 and Mahoney 6-1-31-1.

Malcolm Bloor and Nathan Redmond then set about chasing the target very sensibly, building the innings before cutting loose later on. Bloor either blocked or hit the ball to the boundary and his 11th one brought up his fifty with Redmond on 15. At this point though the youngster showed his promise as he decided to cut loose and raced to his second half century of the weekend in only three more overs.

Their partnership reached 140 from 26 overs when Redmond went for one big hit too many and was caught a deep midwicket for 57. Williams then joined Bloor and continued the attacking policy, dealing mainly in boundaries.

Bloor was finally dismissed for 63 and Williams for 34 but the youngsters now proved they could bat as Monger and Young all but finished the job, bringing the scores level before both tried to end it with extravagant shots and failed. The winning boundary was soon struck though and Thatcham’s future looks bright if these colts can fulfil their potential.
