Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs
Match report
Thatcham travelled to Andover in last Sunday’s Border League fixture, hoping to build on some positive performances in recent weeks. Having the first chance on a fresh pitch Thatcham struck early with Jack Andrews removing Matt Knight for 6. This was to be the only early inroad as Harry Blackburn and James O’Gorman added 60 for the second wicket before John Williams removed the dangerous O’Gorman. Late call-up Cillie Van Der Merwe started slowly but gained momentum and passed 50 in no time at all. At 176-3, Thatcham were looking at a score well in excess of 250. The introductions of Tom Owen and Chris Bird paid instant dividends as both took wickets in their first overs. The Andover innings finishing on a more than respectable 240-9, with Tom Owen (4-48) the main wicket taker for the visitors.
In reply the Thatcham openers began steadily against the bowling of father and son team of Phil and James Knight. Josh Winfield and Matt Watts built the platform from which Thatcham could launch later in the innings. Both passed 50 in good time and at 139-0 from 29 overs Thatcham were in a commanding position. The introduction of Ryan Ward would prove to be the match winner for the home side as he struck with his first ball removing Winfield for 62. Watts fell soon after to Van Der Merwe for 59 but at 150-2 Thatcham still sensed a victory. Ryan Ward then started to make inroads securing another wicket from a full toss caught at midwicket and a sharp run out by O'Gorman led to dramatic collapse in the Thatcham batting. From 185 for 3 Thatcham were soon 187-8 as batsmen came and went without making any impact on the game. From a promising position, the game was effectively beyond Thatcham despite a late flourish from Nathan Redmond. Ward finished off the Thatcham innings to finish with 6-33 from his 6 over stint.
