Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v Swindon on Sun 01 Aug 2010 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 44 runs

Match report Thatcham made it two in two following their 44 run victory over Swindon in the Border League. Having won a second toss in a row, Thatcham batted first in rather batsmen friendly conditions. The decision was vindicated as Simon Rider (21) and Josh Winfield continued their opening form scoring 34 from the first four overs before Rider fell. John Williams gained a promotion up the order to build on the start already given to them. Carnage ensued for the next hour of play with Williams blasting his way to 80 before Winfield had even made double figures. At the half way stage Thatcham were handily placed with 126 on the board and two set batsmen. Williams’ luck eventually ran out finally falling to a well judged catch in the deep. Owen Jenkins (10) nudged the score up past the 150 mark on to towards 200 with Winfield now starting to take authority. With the dismissal of Jenkins, skipper Paul Jenkins came in and immediately propelled the score over 200. Both ran well and with some questionable field placings the home side were able to finish on 240, Winfield making a superb unbeaten 80. Thatcham would have past 250 had it not have been for the spin of Matthew Gumm (0-24 from nine overs) and David Miles (2-58).

Following the last stunning Sunday tea of the season, both teams seemed confident of pulling off a victory. The Swindon reply started disastrously with the top five back in the hutch without six overs even being bowled. Tristan Allen proving to be the spearhead of the home attack picking up the first three Swindon wickets. Thatcham should be commended on their early fielding holding several difficult chances including a spectacular effort from Paul Jenkins who lept like a flaming gazelle to hold the chance. Liam Tucker and skipper Jamie Baden made light work of the softening ball passing 100 within 16 overs and looking likely to pull off a shock victory. A breakthrough was desperately needed and came from the spin of John Williams first removing Baden and then Tucker soon after for a well crafted 57. At 146-7 and plenty of overs in hand a victory was still a possibility for the away side. Williams again put paid to this taking two wickets to two balls to leave Swindon reeling at 167-9. Gumm continued to fight for his side but with an ever increasing rate the pressure eventually told as Miles was run out leaving Gumm stranded on 40. Williams taking the plaudits, again, with a solid all round performance finishing with 4-24 from his nine over spell. Matt Taylor (2-39) and Tristan Allen (3-44) showing great control and lots of potential as a new ball pairing.
