Match report Thatcham II’s went for a visit to Abingdon Vale, after losing the toss was asked to take the field on a cold windy afternoon. Ansell and Wylie opened the bowling with Ansell having a successful LBW appeal against one of the rapid scoring openers and then quickly dismissing their next batsman cheaply.
With a change of bowlers Cooper and Mahoney slowed the scoring rate right down but without taking any wickets. Steadman stepped in for Mahoney and with his first over trapped the batsman into a square cut to the boundary where Winfield was laying in wait to take a great catch, dismissing Nageshkar for 68. Winfield and Lynch took over the bowling duties with Winfield peppering the batsman until getting Groomet trapped LBW. Ansell and Wylie finished off the innings ending with Abingdon 185 for 5.

Watts and Winfield opened for Thatcham against a lighting fast bowling attack both having difficulties in getting the ball away. Winfield (3) tried to pull a short ball which hit his helmet and knocked him to the floor hitting his own wicket in the process. Phillips (2) LBW and Billings (3) caught both going cheaply. With a change of bowlers Watts and Lynch started to score freely until Watts (25)was LBW. With Wylie taking the crease and another good partnership started until Lynch was caught (21) to be replaced by Mahoney (22) scoring freely until he too was caught. Cooper joined Wylie but the fast bowlers returned, bowling Cooper (13) and Wylie (40) getting a top edge. Ansell and Steadman tried to carrying on the batting but Steadman was bowled after 3 balls leaving Ansell and Lavender the impossible task to score 36 off the last over. Ansell swung the bat for the first ball of the over, if he made contact the ball would have cleared Didcot power station but unfortunately he missed, the ball took out the middle stump. Thatcham ended up 34 runs short.
