Match report Thatcham’s hopes of building on last week’s opening day victory quickly evaporated on Saturday with a crushing defeat away at Kew.

On an excellent batting surface, Kew openers Maynard (116) and Fridericks (167) took advantage of some indifferent Thatcham bowling in an outstanding, unbroken partnership of 314. Runs came easily for both batsmen, with the prolific Fridericks particularly impressive, but Thatcham were poor in the field, spilling five catches and struggling on a difficult outfield. Whilst Thatcham had little go their way, with both openers caught off no-balls, it was a stunning effort from the Kew batsmen and Thatcham’s disappointing bowling display should not detract from a ruthless Kew performance.

Despite the huge total, the fine batting surface and fast outfield meant Thatcham were still in the game and a solid start was vital in their run chase. However, as with their fielding performance, Thatcham were well below par and before long were in serious trouble at 16 for 3. When talisman Ali Naqvi followed soon after, the chase was all but over and Thatcham had little option but to try and accumulate some vital batting points. Josh O’Flynn (38), Scott Gibson (32) and Jason Williams (21) added some middle order runs but it was number 10 Chris Bird (50 not out) who gave the Thatcham score some respectability. Batting with injured skipper Dan Williams, they added 53 for the last wicket before the re-introduction of spinner Yaxley finally ended Williams’ brave stint at the crease, dismissing Thatcham for 189 and leaving them needing a much improved performance at Basingstoke next week.
