Match report Thatcham’s recent poor form continued on Saturday with their fourth successive defeat in a close run encounter at league leaders Cove.

Chasing an imposing 250, Thatcham slumped to 36 for 4 as the impressive Short (6-56) ripped through the fragile top order. With Cove seemingly in complete control, Thatcham once again looked to Ali Naqvi who in tandem with teenager Scott Gibson began to rebuild the innings. Gibson showed great resolve for his patient 19, and when Chris Bird joined Naqvi at the crease, Thatcham began to manoeuvre themselves back into contention. Bird (40) continued his recent good form and his promotion up the order paid dividends as Cove’s frustration began to show. The pair added a crucial 74 before a lack of concentration saw Bird depart, but with Naqvi in exceptional form Thatcham were still very much in the game.

Needing 40 from the last 7 overs, and with 4 wickets in hand, the game was finely balanced and Jason Williams (18) looked determined to partner Naqvi to victory. But with the total within reach it was Naqvi who finally fell, mistiming a pull shot to mid-wicket for a brilliant 102 and whilst Thatcham continued to chase victory, the last few wickets fell quickly to leave them 15 runs short.

Thatcham’s bowlers has earlier toiled against Cove’s strong batting line up and despite fine opening spells from Naqvi and Jason Williams, found themselves on the wrong end of a 100 run opening partnership. The introduction of Chris Bird (4-56) dragged Thatcham back into the game but ex-Hampshire batsman Chris Benham (73*) steadied the Cove ship to reach 250-4.
