Match report A much improved performance saw Thatcham haul themselves off the bottom of Thames Valley divison 1 with a hard fought 4-wicket victory against fellow strugglers Fleet.
Chasing 160 in a rain reduced 44 overs, Josh O’Flynn (15) and Scott Gibson (16) got Thatcham off to a steady start against the dual spin attack of Bywater and Singleton on a wicket that was turning appreciably. With Singleton particularly impressive, it was tough going and the departure of Gibson saw John Williams promoted up the order in an attempt to disrupt the rhythm of the Fleet attack.
Williams (27) and the ever reliable Ali Naqvi pushed the total on, but the testing conditions, slow outfield and accuracy of Singleton made quick runs hard to come by and with 70 still required from the final 10 overs, it was far from certain whether Thatcham would reach their target.
But once again it was Naqvi (66) who proved the pivotal figure as he and Matt Denness (18) began to take control. From a circumspect start, the pair quickly moved through the gears in a crucial 56 run partnership to take Thatcham to the brink of victory. Despite both falling just short of the total, the hard work was done allowing Chris Bird and Jason Williams to see Thatcham home with an over to spare.

Earlier, the Fleet innings had started brightly as Black (35) and Griffiths (19) battled hard in the difficult conditions. Despite some good early work from Ali Naqvi (2 for 45) the arrival of the belligerent Morean (56) added quick runs and a big total looked likely until the introduction of spinners Chris Bird (2 for 26) and John Williams (4 for 34) turned things back in Thatcham’s favour. Williams’ attacking approach paid particular dividends as Fleet slumped from 120 for 3 to 160 all out to help set up the crucial victory.
The win sees Thatcham move above both Fleet and Henley and provides a timely boost ahead of next week’s home encounter with Amersham.
