Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Basingstoke & North Hants on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 23 runs

Match report Thatcham gave themselves a great chance but ultimately failed to break the losing habit at home to Basingstoke on Saturday. With the wicket suggesting some help would be available for the bowlers the home side inserted the visitors.
Ali Naqvi threatened as ever but couldn’t find the edge and he got decent support from Daniel Stephenson and Tim Burnett but after 20 overs Basingstoke were 68-0 and well set for a big total. A fine piece of fielding from Scott Gibson saw Fulton run out for 44 and Thatcham were back in the match.
Rouse came out aggressively but was deceived in the flight by Chris Bird, who was by now using all of his many variations...Droy fell to a good low catch by Dan Stone for 29 and Bird then took one himself to dismiss the dangerous Heylinger.
Parsons was brilliantly caught by Jack Young standing up before Naqvi got in on the act with three quick wickets of his own, taken in a spell of nine consecutive maidens. Fittingly Bird took the final wicket, his sixth, as Basingstoke went from 77-0 to 117 all out in 20 overs. Naqvi finished with 3-34 and Bird an excellent return of 6-36.

118 shouldn’t be a difficult chase but on this season’s evidence, and a still helpful wicket, everyone knew that wasn’t likely to be the case. Naqvi moved up to the top of the order in his final game before going home following a family illness and as ever he was the key.
Thatcham soon slipped to 37-3 before Gibson joined Naqvi in a calm partnership which moved them to within 54 runs of victory. Martyn James broke through though, bowling Gibson for 16 and dismissing Young soon after for 1.
Of course Naqvi was still there, on 48, but when he tried to hit Heylinger over the top he just failed to get the required elevation and was caught at cover. James dismissed an out of sorts Robb Fraser for 0 and Thatcham were now 77-7. Bird and John Williams gave some hope, mixing stout defence with some positive running to add 16 when Heylinger got one through the former.
James (7-34) then wrapped things up with his sixth and seventh wickets as Thatcham capitulated to 94 all out and down to the bottom of the table as Fleet picked up a surprising 25 points against Kew.
