High Wycombe 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham slipped further away from TVL Division One cricket but produced a performance to be proud away at high Wycombe’s second string on Saturday.

A flat track, fast outfield and probably Thatcham’s batting form persuaded Mark Morgan to opt to bat on winning the toss and they got off to a good start, helped by an early drop in the slips and some very indifferent fielding. The bowlers toiled manfully but Stevens and Curzon- Thompson found the boundaries regularly as 109 were added in 22 overs when the introduction of veteran left arm spinner Chris Bird brought immediate reward as Curzon- Thompson was bowled for 39.
He struck again soon after, trapping Stevens lbw for 69 and Scott Gibson was soon in on the act, setting up Janned beautifully. Morgan and Russell took the score to 193-5 after 44 overs when Bird struck for the third time and Thatcham had fought back well.
Downing (40no) and Morgan (59no) then unleashed an assault that saw 68 added in 6.1 overs and a declaration at 50 overs. Bird and Gibson were the pick of the bowlers, the latter with 2-20 in 7 and Bird 3-73 from 15, figures slightly spoiled at the end but which shouldn’t detract from how well he bowled.

Recent form suggested 260 would be at least 150 too many but Thatcham came out positively and although Josh O’Flynn fell for 0 Jamie Young and Daniel Stone looked in good touch. Young went after the spinners in particular, reaching an excellent maiden first team fifty before falling lbw to Wilson for 54 after a partnership of 90 with Stone who now took charge.
The run rate was kept at manageable levels despite the loss of Gibson for 0 as Andy Rishton showed no fear, playing shots all round the wicket as he and Stone added 66 in 10 overs before inexperience got the better of Rishton and he holed out to cover for 37.
Jack Young and Robb Fraser didn’t stay long as three wickets went for four runs, leaving 63 needed from 9 overs, but as long as Stone was there Thatcham felt confident. He played some fantastic shots, especially through the covers, and with Chris Bird continuing his good form hopes were high.
Stone reached his first Division One hundred which included 19 fours before falling going for a big hit, leaving 36 from four required. Bird (21) and John Williams added ten, so 26 were needed from 17 balls. Williams smashed two big sixes, Tim Burnett (9no) managed a boundary soon after and the final over started with 8 needed.
Some very good bowling from Curzon- Thompson saw five from five balls and he then bowled Williams for 17 with the final ball to leave Thatcham an agonising three runs short of victory. Downing completed a good personal performance with 3-45 and Curzon- Thompson 2-19. All in all a fine match which both sides went all out to win.
