Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Cove on Sat 06 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
It was a case of so near yet so far again for Thatcham on Saturday as they were narrowly beaten by undefeated league leaders Cove, leaving then 38 points from safety with only four games left.
A weak constitution saw Ross Schreiber relinquish his openers role as he was indisposed at the start of the innings, meaning Dan Stone (25) moved up to partner Jamie Young. They made a good start with Young taking the attack to Cove, scoring regular boundaries on the on side before misjudging the length of a ball From Andy Short and holing out at mid on for 28.
Schreiber’s problems eased long enough for him to be able bat, unfortunately not for long. Scott Gibson (27) and Stone looked comfortable though as drinks were reached at 75-2 and Thatcham had a good platform.
However, some tight bowling from Taylor and skipper Andy McNeill saw both depart soon after the break and a familiar pattern followed as Thatcham’s last eight wickets went down for 49 runs in 19 overs. Only Jack Young with 18 made a contribution as most of the batters got themselves out as McNeill took 5-37 and Taylor 3-29, Thatcham all out for 124.
A strong batting line up meant Thatcham’s work was really cut out but they made a good start as Gibson bowled Randall with the last ball of the first over. Good became sensational as Chris Bird struck twice in his first over with two sharp catches at silly point accounting for Read and Marsh. In between those two former Hampshire batsman Chris Benham came in, took on a risky run first ball and had Jamie Young’s throw been a couple of centimetres to the left Cove would have been 2-4, as it was 3-3 wasn’t bad for Thatcham.
Benham was obviously the key but he found a useful ally in Short as they rebuilt the innings. Benham attacked at every opportunity and the pair added 80 in 15 overs before the old maxim of not running on a misfield proved true, Short gone for 20. Bird struck again almost immediately, trapping Thomsett lbw for 0 and Thatcham were back in the game.
Benham was now farming the strike and although getting him was key Thatcham were also happy to attack the other end as much as possible. Josh O’Flynn produced a beauty to bowl Short and two balls later trapped Farr lbw, 99-7.
He then tipped the game in Thatcham’s favour as Benham pulled hard but straight to midwicket where Schreiber held on well and was gone for 71. Bird got his fourth wicket when McNeill was well caught at slip by Stone with Cove still needing 16, victory seemingly in Thatcham’s grasp.
DeSouza had other ideas though and played some strong shots to try to get the game finished quickly which he unfortunately did, ending 24 not out, with number 11 Taylor only having to face three balls. O’Flynn produced his best spell for the club with 3-21 and Bird bowled superbly, yet again, finishing with 4-48 but ultimately Thatcham fell short again. Bugger!
