Match report Thatcham continued their so near yet so far recent form as a young side went down to a three wicket defeat away at Amersham on Saturday.

Put in with lots of rain around and a damp wicket Thatcham made a solid start, as Josh O’Flynn and Ross Schreiber (18) added 36 for the first wicket. O’Flynn then took charge in a partnership of 84 with Simon Rider (17), playing strongly through the off side in particular but not missing the opportunity on the on side when it was presented.
At halfway Thatcham were 98-1 and set for a challenging total but some decent bowling from Andy Viney (5-79) kept them in check as O’Flynn fell for 82. Things really slowed following his dismissal as the good start wasn’t built upon and having been looking at 200+ Thatcham were eventually bowled out for 174 in the final over.

However, they made a great start as the dangerous Rob Viney decided to take on O’Flynn’s arm and was run out, immediately followed by Mayer, caught off Dan Stephenson for 0 as the first ended with Amersham 2-2. O’Flynn, also opening the bowling, caused problems but Shuttle and Fleming moved the score to 50 before O’Flynn had Fleming well taken at slip by Chris Bird.
Cann (36) looked in dominant mood as swift progress was made, reaching 96 in the 19th over when he was well caught down the leg side by Chris Rochfort off Scott Gibson. Three wickets then fell for two runs as Gibson (3-21) took two more and Chris Bird (1-52) got in on the act, removing Shuttle for 49, 117-7.
Bird then tempted Rodgers to miscue to mid off but the chance went begging. Although Gibson, Bird and Matt Taylor on debut caused problems it was to be the last chance Thatcham got as Rodgers (39no) and Colquhoun (19no) saw Amersham in 44 overs.
