Match report Thatcham’s 2s returned to winning ways with a comfortable 7 wicket victory at Fleet 2nds on Saturday.

Chasing Fleet’s target of 208 for 8 from 52 overs, the visitor’s top order all contributed with Josh Winfield the mainstay of the innings, hitting a near perfect 90, including 11 boundaries and a huge six over mid-on, before being run out with only 17 required for victory.
Winfield was well supported by Stephen Bird (23) in a 45 run opening stand and then added 65 with returning Loughborough student Tom Mahoney (29) and 81 with the reliable Matt Denness (36 not out).
Thatcham raced past the winning post with 26 balls to spare and claimed a useful 20 points to lift them to 4th position in TVL 5B.

Earlier in the day, Thatcham won the toss and having inserted their hosts made an immediate inroad with Matt Taylor’s wonder-ball dismissal of Fleet skipper Andy Hunt in the second over, then faced the possibility of a 250 plus run chase as Bywaters (34) and Payne (69) smashed 60 runs in the next 11 overs.
Thatcham regained control with the removal of the talented Bywaters by Tim Burnet then proceeded to stem the run rate and chip away with wickets at regular intervals.
Burnett (2 for 64), Nick Voller (1 for 36) and Nick Bishop (2 for 48) all bowled well but Taylor was the pick of the attack again with another 3 wicket haul, taking his league tally to 11 in four games, finishing with 3 for 50 from 12 overs.

Fleet’s respectable total of 208 was never really enough and the steady Thatcham batting saw them home to a well deserved victory prior to this week’s match against Marlow Park at Brownsfield.
