Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Falkland 3 on Sat 18 Jun 2011 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham’s 2nd XI missed a great opportunity to grab second place in Thames Valley 5B when they failed by 8 runs to chase down Falkland 3s 166 for 7 at Brownsfield on Saturday.

In a match reduced to 80-overs by the poor weather, Falkland stuttered to 55 for 3 from 20 overs before heavy showers saw 95 minutes play lost and an early tea interval. After the break, Falkland skipper Graham Beal took the initiative and smashed a quickfire 45 from 40 balls, including 7 boundaries before sportingly walking to the finest of edges to his opposite number Nick Bishop (2 for 44).

Useful knocks from Day (16), Sam Trumper (16 not out) and 11 not out by Callum Johnson pushed the visitors score to 166 for 7 from their revised 42 over allocation. Nick Voller (1 for 27), Tim Burnett (1 for 40) and Josh Winfield (1 for 10) all bowling well and whilst sharp run outs from Bishop and Ravi Mirchandani helped the home sides cause, Thatcham weren’t as sharp as they have been for most of the season in the field and were made to pay later in the day as they attempted the run chase from 38 overs.

Openers Matt Watts (30) and Josh Winfield (46) gave them an excellent start and with Tom Mahoney batting well to carve out a useful 33 from 34 balls, Thatcham looked set to secure the victory and 20 points. However, with Beal and Akram tossing the ball up in an attempt to make the necessary breakthrough and Sam Trumper applying pressure from the other end with a useful spell of 3 for 25 from 7 overs, the home sides response slowed.

In an attempt to boost the rate, Nick Monger and Malcolm Bloor came and went in quick succession, Mirchandani looked well set on 17 before falling to the second of two excellent catches from veteran Pete Randall and things started to look a bit tight for Thatcham – slumping from 92 for 1 to 118 for 5 in six overs. Stephen Bird did the right thing and looked to rotate the strike, taking singles and two’s at regular intervals but good bowling from Johnson (2 for 20 from 9 tight overs) and the returning Afridi proved too difficult to get away and Thatcham’s innings fell away to close on 158 for 7.

Thatcham remain in fourth position and with only three points separating them with second place are hopeful that a good return at Cookham Dean this week will see them push towards the promotion places as they approach the half-way mark in the season. Falkland meanwhile will be pleased with their 10-point haul from the shortened fixture and, with improved availability will also be hoping to push their neighbours all the way to the end of the season.
