Match report Thatcham 2s recorded another 20 point victory at Cookham Dean on Saturday. Having won the toss and elected to bat, Cookham Dean’s opening pair settled in well against Thatcham’s Matt Taylor and Tim Burnett (1 for 25 from 9), adding 36 before Burnett removed the dangerous Dave Brooks for 26 in the 12th over.

Thatcham’s bowlers kept things tight and were rewarded when Stephen Bird took an outstanding leg side stumping to dismiss Brar for 11 off Voller (2 for 39 from 14) and whilst Dardenn applied himself at one end, wickets continued to fall at a steady rate, with Voller and Nick Bishop (4 for 39 from 15.3 overs) proving a useful combination once gain during the middle part of the innings.

With the middle order taken care of, Josh Winfield took the ball and quickly sent Dardenn back to the pavilion for a hard worked 60 and from there finished off the tail with Bishop, Cookham Dean 149 all out in the 49th over.

In reply, Winfield and Matt Watts put together an excellent opening partnership, picking up the pace well once they had settled in and were unfortunate to miss out on a deserved century opening stand when Watts fell for 38 to an ill-conceived sweep shot against Taylor with the score on 99. Mettler then snapped up both Simon Rider and Matt Denness in the next over and with Jamie Young unlucky to depart to one that stayed low, Thatcham had slumped to 111 for 4.

Whilst Winfield continued at the crease, victory was a formality but he too perished looking for a third ‘six’ off the persistent aylor for 67. Robb Fraser joined the reliable Stephen Bird at the crease and the pair looked to be working their way to victory before Fraser was caught off Brar’s gentle spin bowling, Thatcham now 142 for 6.

Bird (23 not out) remained calm though and saw his side home in the 41st over with a clean blow over the bowlers head, Thatcham retaining fourth place and looking forward to entertaining second placed Datchet 2nd XI at Brownfield on Saturday as they look to pick up points and places in the table at the half-way point of the season.
