Marlow Park v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 06 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham’s second string missed out on a chance to claim second spot on Saturday when a middle-innings recovery from Marlow Park took the game away from them and kept things interesting in the chase for a promotion place to Division 4.

Marlow Park won the toss and chose to bat on a slightly damp track. Thatcham’s veteran bowling partnership of Nick Voller and Nick Bishop settled into things quickly and reduced the home side to 24 for 3 in double quick time before Hawkins (34) and Francis set about staging a recovery. The introduction of Tristan Allen into the attack shortly before drinks however saw the departure of Hawkins to an unplayable in swinging delivery and at the break Marlow Park were in trouble at 89 for 4 from 26 overs.

However, Thatcham were slow out of their blocks after the interval and left-hander Miller soon tucked into anything pitched up as he added a match changing 116 runs with Thatcham not really having any answer to an impressive array of strokes to all parts of the ground. Josh Winfield entered the attack and was unlucky not to snap up a wicket early and the returning Voller (2 for 85 from 17) could have removed Miller albeit to what would have been a marvellous running catch by Simon Rider that just evaded his grasp.

Bishop tempted Francis (68) down the track and Voller eventually got his man when Miller (87) perished to a good catch by Winfield at mid-on but the damage had now been done. Marlow Park pushed on and useful contributions from Munsha (24) and Lewis (20 not out) saw them to a daunting 264 for 7 from their full allocation of overs and a stiff challenge for the Thatcham line up.

Keen to take the game to the home side, Thatcham were faced with a fairly defensive field and the old ball and despite starts from all of the top order, nobody was able to make the vital big score and the chances of stealing an unlikely victory became unlikely from the 28th over when Rider came and went for 16, Thatcham 109 for 5. Matt Denness (37) and Bishop set about batting time and moving towards maximum batting points with a view to having a look at pushing things on but when Denness played on off an inside edge and his foot work still needed to be done to get the visitors past the 200 mark.

However, Bishop (37 not out) continued to bat sensibly and a useful contribution from Chris Rochfort (21) ensured that this target was achieved in the 47th over and Thatcham’s innings closed on 202 for 8 after their 48 over allocation, Marlow Park claiming a useful 14 points and Thatcham returning to Brownsfield with a disappointing 8 point haul.
