Match report Thatcham’s 2s continued to push for a promotion place into TVL4 with a comfortable 7 wicket victory over a young Harefield 3s at Brownsfield on Saturday.

Chasing a modest target of 156, Thatcham got a useful start through Josh Winfield (23) and Simon Rider (21) before the pair fell in quick succession to leave the home side on 46 for 2.

Stephen Bird and Matt Watts consolidated well against some accurate bowling from the Harefield attack and picked off anything short or wide to build a match winning third wicket partnership of 97. Watts (47) struck nine boundaries before falling just short of a well deserved half century and after a minor scare with youngster Arthur Edwards (9 not out) being dropped first ball, Bird saw his side to victory in the 43rd over, also just missing out on a ‘fifty’ to finish 46 not out.

Earlier, Harefield recovered from the loss of opener Jordaan to Matt Taylor’s third ball of the match and looked set for a useful score as Petley (23) and Ogden added 66 for the second wicket.

However, the Thatcham bowlers found their line and length and, backed up by some useful fielding, turned the screw with good effect. Wickets fell at regular intervals and only Ogden (69) and number 9 Patel (32) showed any real resistance against Tristan Allen (3 for 29 from 9) and Nick Bishop (5 for 28 from 18.5).

Promising young left arm spinner Tommy Mather delivered another useful nine over spell to support his skipper and Thatcham eventually dismissed their opponents for 156 in the 50th over.
