Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI travelled for the second week in a row. This week, to Cove to face their Academy side, who fielded a good mixture of youth and experience. Cove won the toss and made what appeared to be the obvious choice on a wicket that looked as though it could have some inconsistency early on.

And so it proved, as Thatcham openers Mick Stone (0) and Owen Jenkins (6) were soon back in the pavilion. Rahman-Gul Toothakhel (7) came in at 3 and looked to play very aggressively, but also fell cheaply. Paul Holland (11) looked to steady the ship with Nathan Redmond (18). With the score at 47 for 5 though, the Thatcham men were fearing a repeat of last weeks debacle against Bagshot. Adrian Bromhead (15), Shiva Karthikeyan (15 and Gavin Ansell (12) added some valuable runs at the end, but Thatcham were not happy at having being dismissed for only 95, barely improving on last weeks performance.

In reply, Thatcham opened up with the slow left arm spin pairing of Tommy Mather (4-1-0-12) and Mick Stone (4-2-0-14), using the old ball. Thatcham needed early wickets and although the first 3 overs from each bowler were very tidy and did challenge the batsmen, an expensive and wicketless 4th over from each bowler saw Thatcham take the new ball and turn to the seam of Gavin Ansell (11-3-5-27) and Paul Holland (4-0-1-5). Both bowlers found excellent movement with the new ball and, with Cove having reached 41-1, the wickets began to tumble, quickly becoming 41-4. Owen Jenkins (2-0-0-17) briefly replaced Holland, but he struggled for accuracy and was quickly replaced by Nathan Redmond (5.1-0-2-16). The Cove batsmen had little answer to Ansell or Redmond and the pressure forced a couple of run outs to improve Thatcham’s chances. The telling moment came when Jake Roylance pulled a short of a length delivery from Ansell, straight to Owen Jenkins at mid-wicket. That reduce Cove to 89-8 and Thatcham sensed they were in with a chance. That said, Cove only needed 7 runs for victory and were still the firm favourites! That became 91-9 and with only another single added, Redmond took the final Cove wicket and they were all out for 92!
