Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v Royal Ascot 3 on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report On a hot and sunny day, Thatcham played hosts to Royal Ascot 3rd XI. Thatcham won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Thatcham opened with Gavin Ansell (21-4-4-65) and Shiva Karthikeyan (8.4-1-3-23) who both bowled with excellent control to reduce the visitors to 51 for 3 by the end of the 15th over. Liam Redmond (2-0-0-14) replaced Karthikeyan and bowled some challenging balls, but was punished for anything slightly wayward by the Ascot batsmen, who looked to up the run rate. Adam Mather (4-0-0-28) came on, while Ansell kept going at the other end and again had the batsmen in trouble on more than one occasion, but the Ascot men got after him a little and left the young lad wicketless.
The wrist spin of Mather was replaced with the wrist spin of Tom Owen (10-2-2-35), who put in his most impressive performance of the season so far. Bowling with more pace, he was able to rush the batsmen, even though little turn was on offer. Mick Stone (4-1-1-20) eventually replaced Ansell, after his marathon 20 over spell and picked up a wicket with his second ball, before Karthikeyan returned to polish off the Ascot tail, dismissing them for a fine 198 runs from 49.4 overs.

In reply, Thatcham opened with Mick Stone (47) and Darren Sopp (7). Both looked comfortable, until Sopp was rather comically dismissed, having lost sight of a long hop, he recoiled to square leg, only to see the innocuous delivery loop down on to the top of middle stump. Liam Redmond (73) came in at 3 and looked to match Stone’s domination of the Ascot attack, bludgeoning the ball to all parts!
Stone fell 3 short of a fine fifty and was replaced by Bob Gadsden (27), who again looked comfortable at the crease and was unfortunate to be run out. Richard Lavender (0) came and went at number five and was replaced by the returning Tom Cogdell (11 not out), who had earlier been taken to hospital with a suspected broken finger and missing finger nail. He would see the home side to victory as Redmond went late on, Ryan Beal (1) was undone by some indifferent bounce and Gavin Ansell was caught after a quick fire 28. Thatcham reaching a winning 199-8 after 49.1 overs, with 5 balls to spare.

That gave Thatcham 20 points, to Royal Ascots 12 and a great end to the first half of the season, leaving Thatcham in mid-table. Next week sees top of the table British Airways 4th XI travel to West Berkshire, and Thatcham will be looking to avenge a narrow defeat from the first game of the season.
