Match report Thatcham got their Sunday campaign up and running following a last ball victory over Purley at Brownsfield.

Having won the toss and batted, Purley got off to a solid start with Gautham Kamath (24) and Nick Holman (32) adding 59 for the first wicket. Gavin Ansell and Nathan Redmond bowled without much luck until Kamath was well caught by Josh O’Flynn. Holman followed the very next over to John Williams. With two wickets soon after the visitors were in trouble five down for 90 at the half way stage. Paul Reber (42) and Mark Nash (72) paced the rebuilding process brilliantly, adding 112 before the latter became Dominic Melville’s first victim of the day. With Chris Bird picking up two wickets in the last over Thatcham had managed to drag Purley back to a respectable score of 193. Williams (3-28) and Bird (2-27) showing spin to be the key on a slow pitch.

Josh O’Flynn and Scott Gibson (both 34) started positively moving the score to 72 before both fell in consecutive balls to Cyril Cox (2-29). Chris Bird (20) and Jack Young (35) picked up where the openers left off moving the home side past the 100 mark. Bird perished trying to push on and with a steadily increasing rate Thatcham had to respond. Paul Jenkins (18) came and went leaving Adam Philips to guide Thatcham towards victory. He and Young did just that until the latter was well stumped and with Philips run out for a superb 29 it came down to Thatcham needing five from the last five deliveries. Nathan Redmond and Gavin Ansell saw the home side across the finishing line without any more issues.
