Match report Thatcham produced another thrilling Border league fixture despite losing out to local rivals Falkland by three wickets at Brownsfield.

Batting first on a reasonably dry pitch Thatcham’s openers took full value from a wayward opening combination racking up 68 in the first ten with Josh Winfield (36) and Josh O’Flynn (70) dealing mainly in boundaries. The introduction of Andy Bolan removed Winfield but Jamie Young joined O’Flynn and continued the scoring rate. Returning skipper Duncan Johnson (4-54) put the breaks on the Thatcham innings as five wickets fell for just 18 runs in a seven over spell where the home side almost lost their way. Tristan Allen (13 not out) and John Joel (17 not out) added valuable runs meaning the home side could post a below par, but competitive, 224. Joel Martin (2-41) aiding Johnson in keeping Thatcham 20 runs short of their ideal target.

Thatcham made the ideal start in their defence removing Dave Bloor in the second over. Andy Bolan (50) and skipper Sam Piper (62) rebuilt and took the game to Thatcham adding 103 seemingly putting the game well out of the home sides reach. Twin spinners John Joel (2-46) and John Williams (2-25) did as Johnson did in the Thatcham innings slowing the rate and bringing about mistakes from the visitors. At 163-7 and two new batsmen at the crease it was going to be a question of whose nerve held. Josh O’Flynn (2-44) tried in vain to haul back Ben Thomas (45 not out) and Joel Martin (17 not out) but came up short as both men saw Falkland home inside 41 overs with three wickets remaining.

Yet another entertaining fixture that on this occasion failed to go the way of the home side. A lot of positives can be taken and Thatcham hope a trip to Andover can produce a morale boosting victory.
