Andover II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday on Sun 01 May 2011 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 140 runs

Match report Andover won the toss and dually decided to bowl on what looked like a good early season wicket. With many of Thatcham’s batsmen having their first run out of the season, some encouraging performances were seen from several people. Mick Stone (27) and Joe Harwood (13) looked solid when opening the batting, Tommy Mather (10) and Gavin Ansell (20) added useful runs in the middle order, but the outstanding performances came from Piers Bragg (43) and the debutant, John Joel (33). Both batted with fantastic levels of aggression, punishing any bowling that wasn’t bang on the mark. Andover, it’s fair to say, wouldn’t have been pleased with their fielding performance, which saw a total of 38 extras conceded, Thatcham being bowled out for 206.

In reply, Thatcham (using the old ball) opened with seam bowling from Gavin Ansell and Will Harwood. With the first 2 overs of the innings being hammered for 21 runs, Thatcham could have let their heads drop, but instead, teeth were gritted, lines and lengths improved and the Andover wickets began to tumble! Will Harwood (5-0-0-32) was very unlucky to suffer some suspect fielding which meant his figures were worse than he deserved. Added to several inside edges evading the stumps, meant he ended wicketless, from what was a good spell. Gavin Ansell (5-1-5-15) bowled full and straight and picked up regular wickets, as the rusty Andover batsmen struggled, including 3 wickets in 4 balls... The hat-trick being missed through a leg side wide (jug avoidance surely...). After 10 overs, Andover were reeling on 58-5, having started so well. The wrist spin twins of Adam Mather (2.1-0-3-7) & Tommy Mather (2-1-1-2) came on to run through the Andover tail, both finding turn on a track that offered little to the opposition attack. Very encouraging from the youngsters, at a point in the season where wrist spinners might struggle, they impressed greatly! Andover were dismissed for 66 and will no doubt look to improve from there as their season continues.

All round, a fine performance from Thatcham, who will be happy with a good days work, though improvements with ground fielding will need to be made, with stiffer opposition to come.
