Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v South Wilts on Sat 22 Apr 2006 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 3 Runs

Match report On a gorgeous spring day the 2006 cricket season got underway, with Thatcham entertaining Southern Premier League side
South Wilts in a 40 over game on Saturday.

Thatcham welcomed new signings Toby Radford, Nick Shea, Raheel Zaman and Faisal Ali into the fold, Radford joining in
the Winter from Andover and bringing Zaman and Ali with him, both highly rated 16 year old seam prospects currently with the
Middlesex Academy, having been with Reading and Maidenhead & Bray previously, Shea is a highly promising Aussie
hard hitting opening bat, again only 16, but on a gap year working at Elstree School.
Pete Edgcombe, Andy Harland, Danny Stone and Chris Bird were not available for selection, with Bird a longer term absentee
due to a close season shoulder operation, but he should commence bowling around the end of May and Harland, Edgcombe and
Stone are all back in contention for the 29th/30th weekend games.

With Brownsfield looking exceptional for the 1st game of the season, Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and
asked the visitors to bat and South Wilts made a good start through Tanner and Combined Services all rounder Alex Senneck,
reaching 65 without loss in the 17th over before Nick Bishop enticed Tanner into a lofted drive straight to Johnson at mid off
and he was on his way for 21. Senneck and skipper Rob Wade put on another good partnership of 57, before Zaman returned
for a 2nd spell and cleaned up Senneck for a hard hit 64 in the 27th over. Wade and Hayward then produced the best partnership
of the innings, putting on 72 in quick time, Hayward smashed 4 'sixes' in a quickfire half century but it was his skipper who went
first, Nick Shea taking a comfortable catch off Johnson's bowling, Wade on his way for 45 and with a platform for the last 10 overs
the visitors were looking for quick runs, but wickets still fell, Hayward was well caught by Ettridge at long on for 60 and Johnson
then went on to pick up 3 more quick wickets, Cranch bowled for 3, Pittman caught by Paul Jenkins for 1 and with the last ball
of the innings Crick looked for a big shot and was beaten by the turn and stumped by Chris Wright without scoring, South Wilts
finishing on a very competitive 229-7 from 40 overs, Johnson picking up 5-51 from his 8 overs with Nick Bishop 1-23 and
Raheel Zaman 1-61 the other wicket takers, but all the bowlers did their job with Paul Jenkins putting in a good spell 0-39
from his 8 overs and Robb Frasrer unlucky not to take wicket, 0-47 from his stint.

Shea and James Ettridge opened up for Thatcham, putting on 45 for the first wicket, before Ettridge was bowled around
his legs by Shakoor for 15. Toby Radford joined Shea and the pair batted very well, Shea reaching a first '50' for Thatcham
and he looks a fine player and with Radford using all his class and experience the total was certainly gettable, but Shea
then fell LBW to the spin of Hayward for 58 which brought Johnson in to join Radford and the pair set about hauling the
target in with 133 runs needed off 18 overs at a rate of around 7 per over and with a short boundary one side this was
definately on. Radford reached a debut 50 and the partnership was 101 when Johnson charged Crick and was bowled
for 42, the score 192-3 and with 5 overs left to get 37, Faisal Ali gave it his best shot trying to give Radford the strike
and eventually it all came down to the last ball of the innings, Thatcham at 226-3 needed 4 runs off the last ball to win
with Radford on strike, but Crick held his nerve, took the pace off the delivery and Radford swung and missed leaving South
Wilts with the win by 3 runs. Radford finished unbeaten on a superb 93 and Ali 10 not out.
Senneck was the pick of the visitors bowling 0-20 from his 8 overs, with Crick, Hayward and Shakoor picking up a
wicket apiece.

It was a good first game workout for Thatcham, with the postives far outweighing any negatives and they look to next
Saturdays local derby at Falkland to continue the good form and get going ready for the League season ahead
