Match report Thatcham made the short trip to Marlow on Saturday and recorded a comfortable 8 wicket win to kick the TVL season off with a 20 point haul.

Marlow skipper Mark Rochester won the toss and decided to bat and things started well for the home side with Paskins and Madurasinghe recording a half century stand through the first 15 overs, but that was as good as it got as the introduction of Paul Jenkins, after a good opening spell from Raheel Zaman, provided the breakthrough as he sent Paskins off stump cartwheeling out the ground for 31. Skipper Duncan Johnson replaced Pete Edgcombe and his very first ball found the edge of Madurasinghe’s bat and Chris Wright took a great catch to dismiss the former Marlow skipper for 15. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, Jenkins with a devastating spell of 6 overs, 4 maidens, 3 for 4, before having to be taken off due to the ECB fast bowling directives whilst Johnson wheeled away for 14 overs returning fine figures of 5-30 as the home side were dismissed for a disappointing 138 in 43.2 overs.

With the visitors having 56 overs to get the target Marlow needed early breakthroughs, so it was with some surprise that they elected to take the old ball and open with the spin of Wrighton and Farhan, although Nick Shea was unlucky to be caught at short leg for 8 off Farhan, which bought Toby Radford to the crease and with James Ettridge despatching the ball to all parts reaching a superb 50 off just 63 balls, it was this chanceless partnership of 71 that took the visitors close to the target and although Ettridge perished lbw to Howell for 61, Johnson hit a quick 18 to finish the game leaving Radford unbeaten on 46 and a Thatcham win by 8 wickets before the heavens opened and the rain came down.

It was a good start for the West Berks side, but in the coming weeks with the visits of Chesham and Cove to Brownsfield and a trip to Harefield sandwiched in between, things are going to get a whole lot tougher.
