Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Cove on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 34 runs

Match report Thatcham bagged a maximum 25 point haul on Saturday at Brownsfield with a victory against a talented Cove side who will be kicking themselves for not chasing down a generous Thatcham declaration of 221-5 in 50 overs.

Cove skipper Jeremy Jones won the toss and put the home side in and Gavin McDonald and James Ettridge opened up against the new ball attack of Neil Randall and Short and batting proved difficult, but the opening pair dug in and got through the first 10 overs with 24 on the board without loss. The breakthrough came for Cove with Harvey replacing Randall and McDonald was caught for a battling 34. Nick Shea hit a brisk 12 before he played all over a full delivery from Harvey and was bowled and another wicket fell straight away as the spin of Ashton accounted for Ettridge, trapped lbw by the quicker ball for 20. It was down to Julian Wood and Duncan Johnson to rebuild at 72-3 through 20 overs and the experienced pair did just that, the Cove fielders spread for Wood and he batted sensibly taking the 1’s and 2’s and crushing any bad balls to the fence and got good support from Johnson as a partnership of 85 was added in 20 overs to get the home side up to 157-4 through 40 overs and a good platform to push on. Johnson perished on the wide long on boundary for 32, but Wood reached a super 50 with a towering six off Ashton, but in trying to repeat the stroke he fell caught for 57. Matt Denness and Chris Wright then added 48 quick runs, both players looking in fine touch, both hitting 2 huge sixes apiece and the score had reached 221-5 in 50 overs when skipper Johnson declared to set Cove an obtainable target to try and win the game.

Opting to open the bowling with the old ball and a combination of spin and seam, Cove got off to a flyer and with James Marsh and Gary Miles tucking into Pete Edgcombe and Duncan Johnson as too many bad balls were sent down and the boundary was peppered and 50 runs came off the first 7 overs before a change to the new ball paid immediate dividends for Edgcombe as a smart piece of work by keeper Chris Wright had Miles stumped for 24. James Marsh had looked in imperious form but disaster struck for the visitors as he was run out by Neil Randall, a fine throw by Nick Bishop, Edgcombe whipped the bails off and Marsh was on his way for 33, Cove 57-2. Nick Randall joined his brother Neil, but although Neil signalled his intentions straight away with successive boundaries off Edgcombe, the second a six over long on, he had to leave the field with a tight hamstring, which bought N Marsh in, but once again the curse of the run out struck, with Marsh joining his older brother in the clubhouse, run out for 10. Neil Randall then came back out but he holed out to a great catch from Paul Jenkins off Nick Bishop for 21. Skipper Jones joined Nick Randall and Cove were still favourites, boundaries kept coming and providing someone could just bat through, the game was the visitors to win.
Thatcham kept coming back though, Bishop kept things tight for 9 overs and Johnson returned and found some rhythm, the bad balls of the opening spell suddenly history and Nick Randall fell, caught easily at mid on by Wood for 30. Jones found an able partner in Griffiths and a partnership of 47 between them got the score to 173-6, before Edgcombe trapped Jones lbw for 27. With 48 needed and plenty of overs left, Griffiths could win the game for the visitors, but Edgcombe had other ideas and removed Reed and Short cheaply, both bowled and Griffiths then played on to Johnson for 33 and 173-6 became 183-9 and with the game turned on it’s head, Ashton tried to sweep Johnson and was well caught by Edgcombe at slip, Cove all out for 187 from 46.2 overs, losing their last 5 wickets for just 14 runs to hand 25 points to the home side in an amazing turnaround.

Thatcham top the table by 1 point from their closest rivals NPL Teddington, who they visit this week.
