Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v High Wycombe II on Sat 17 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 8 wickets

Match report Thatcham entertained a weak High Wycombe second string at Brownsfield on Saturday and eased to an 8 wicket win and 20 points.

High Wycombe 2’s skipper Bill Hubbick won the toss and to Thatcham’s dismay decided to bat first, thus wrecking any chance of the home side getting a much needed maximum 25 point haul against a side they had targeted for such a win, with High Wycombe’s main ambition to get as many points as possible trying to take advantage of the double batting points on offer for batting first.

Thatcham’s opening attack of Faisal Ali and Raheel Zaman went about their business from ball one with pace and the breakthrough soon came with Zaman trapping Stone lbw for 6 and 12-1 was soon 12-2, Stevens edging Ali to Chris Wright for 2. Partnerships were never built and Wycombe never looked like getting a total, the run rate was poor against some tight bowling and the pressure told as Hubbick was brilliantly caught by James Ettridge lowdown at slip off Rakesh Patel for 2 and with Pete Edgcombe producing an inspired spell of away swing and seam movement, he took out Brown for 3 and Bhardwaj without scoring, both lbw. Duncan Johnson and Chris Bird then spun the Wycombe innings to an end, as the tail folded, Bird taking 2-12 and Johnson 3-27 with the visitor’s number 4 Webster left stranded on 29 not out, his side skittled for 100 in the 41st over. All the Thatcham bowlers returned tidy figures and it was a case of job done.

With tea not quite ready, the Thatcham openers Gavin McDonald and James Ettridge had half an hour to bat, so faced 9 overs and got off to a great start reaching 43 without loss.
The trend continued after tea with both batsmen in good form, McDonald unleasing some beautifully timed straight strokes and Ettridge harsh on anything loose and the partnership was 86 when Ettridge fell to a decent yorker from Webster for 32. Paul Jenkins was then picked up at gully a run later and it was left to McDonald and Duncan Johnson to see Thatcham home in the 20th over, McDonald reaching a chanceless half century with an unbeaten 51 and Johnson finishing 12 not out.

It was a good all round performance from Thatcham, although with all 3 sides above them, NPL Teddington, Harefield and Kew all picking up maximum 25 points hauls, it’s a case of 5 points dropped, with the only crumb of comfort being that there was absolutely nothing the West Berkshire side could do about it.

Thatcham travel to Kew on Saturday in a vital clash, with Kew looking very strong having done some useful recruiting since being promoted from Div 2 last year.
