Amersham v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 02 Sep 2006 at 12.30
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 7 wickets

Match report Thatcham travelled to Amersham for the penultimate game of the TVL 1 season, knowing that promotion to the Home Counties set-up was beyond them for another year, but this didn’t stop a ruthlessly efficient display resulting in a comfortable 7 wicket win and 20 points.

Losing the toss the visitors were asked to bowl and with Julian Wood the only seam bowler in the side, with the absence of Faisal Ali, Raheel Zaman and Pete Edgcombe, skipper Duncan Johnson had to roll back the clock 20 years to produce a spell of left arm seam until spin could be introduced. With Wood keeping things tight at one end, R Viney decided Johnson’s part time seam had to go, but after hitting a maximum over long on, he then chased a wider one and edged to James Ettridge at 2nd slip and he clung on to give Thatcham their first success of the afternoon. Wood and Johnson were replaced by the spin of Nick Bishop and John Williams at the 15 over stage and Amersham were finding runs hard to come by. Fleming had reached 23 before he was undone by Bishop, the home side 56-2 through 22 overs. Kiwi Chris Sowden and A Viney then produced the partnership of the innings, adding 93 together, Sowden in particular playing some delightful on-drives before he was bowled by the spin of the returning Johnson for 65 and there was time for the Thatcham skipper to pick up 2 more wickets, A Viney caught and bowled for 57 and then the Amersham skipper Chris Owen, bowled for 8, to leave Jackson unbeaten on 15 and Stephenson 2 not out as the innings closed at 198-5 from the 52 overs.

Johnson was the most successful of the Thatcham attack, picking up 4-55 from 13 overs and taking his season’s tally of League wickets to 35, with Nick Bishop 1-51 from 13 overs the other wicket taker. Special mention should also go to John Williams who bowled 13 overs of quality left arm spin, extracting turn and bounce and he was unlucky to finish without a wicket with 0-49 from his 13 overs and Julian Wood 0-32 from 13 was his usual economical self and with just the 4 bowlers to choose from, Thatcham were very pleased to keep the home side under 200.

Johnson and James Ettridge opened the innings for Thatcham, against the old ball spin attack of Atkinson and Moore and it was Moore who struck the early blow, Johnson playing for turn and edging a straight delivery to R Viney behind the sticks for 2. Ettridge was looking in fine form and had reached 23 when he fell lbw attempting to slog sweep the leg spin of Atkinson which bought the in form Steve Wyatt in to join Toby Radford and these 2 produced a super display of batting and a partnership of 102 to put their side in the box seat. Wyatt played beautifully, mixing stout defence with daring attacking play, sending 4 maximum’s over the ropes on his way to a brilliant 72, only ending when he chipped Sowden to mid-wicket, Thatcham 131-3 through 34 overs, needing 68 from the 14 overs remaining as the rain and murky light appreared to close in. Julian Wood was just the man needed to stride to the crease in such conditions and he blazed away with Radford playing his usual self assured anchor role, reaching yet another half century and the game was finished in the 44th over, Wood 40 not out and Radford 58 not out, Thatcham 199-3 in 44.3 overs and a comfortable win with all credit also to Amersham for staying on the field towards the end when conditions worsened and many sides would have tried to get off the pitch.

Thatcham entertain already relegated Hampton Hill on Saturday in the final game of the season at Brownsfield and will look to end the season on a high with a chance of snatching 3rd place over Amersham who currently have a 12 point cushion over the West Berkshire outfit.
