Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Marlow II on Sat 13 May 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
Thatcham’s second string got their season off to a winning start with a six wicket victory over Marlow II sealed from the first ball of the last over of an entertaining match.
Marlow had elected to bat and showed positive intent from the start, scoring at five an over, before Hillier fell to a catch at the wicket off Rakesh Patel (1-45) for 13. Trotter and Aslam continued in the same vein and it wasn’t until Tim Mahoney came into the attack that the scoring rate was slowed somewhat, although Patel bowled well enough to pick more than his one wicket.
Marlow’s second wicket added exactly 100 before Mahoney deceived Aslam and bowled him for 55 and then saw two chances go down soon after. The 37th over saw the introduction of captain Perry Moore and a change of ends for Mahoney and this paid immediate dividends as Trotter miscued to square leg from the veteran seamers first ball to depart for 63. Moore soon got in on the act as Peacock was very caught at mid off by Faisal Ali and then a risky second run saw Patel’s throw and good work from Stephen Bird behind the stumps run out Gear.
Stanbury struck some lusty blows but when he was well stumped by Bird the bowlers were able to keep things tight as only 14 runs came from the final 5 overs and Marlow finished their 52 overs on 212-9. Moore finished with 3-34 and Mahoney 4-51 from 18 excellent overs.
Thatcham made a slow but steady start with Iain Cottingham and Gavin McDonald looking to build a platform for the later assault. Unusually it was the former who dominated the scoring although McDonald did try to feed him the strike. The innings gradually gathered momentum and the fifty came up in the 13th over. Cotting reached his half century as Thatcham seemed to be cruising to their target.
The introduction of spin brought the breakthrough for Marlow as McDonald fell to a stunning slip catch for 18. One over later his opening partner follweded, tamely chipping to midwicket for a fine 57. However, at 95-2 at the halfway point of the innings Thatcham were still well in control.
Unfortunately the innings became completely bogged down at this stage as only 30 runs came from the next 12 overs and youngsters Ali and Tom Donnelly were dismissed. So with 12 to go the home side now needed 87 to win. Enter Rakesh Patel. With two spinners operating and quick runs needed it was the perfect situation for the Bolton lad and he didn’t disappoint. With Stephen Bird starting to find some fluency the pair sensibly played themselves in before destroying the Marlow bowling. Patel survived a simple chance at deep midwicket on 18 and when he despatched the next ball out of the ground Marlow realised what a costly mistake they had just made.
Patel continued to pepper the ‘V’ between long on and square leg while Bird fed him the strike but didn’t miss the opportunity to hit boundries of his own. Patel reached a brilliant 50 from just 32 balls and finished with 60 not out with six fours and four sixes. With four needed from the final over Bird ended the game in fine style by smashing Aslam straight back over his head for a boundary from the first ball and finished on 47 as Thatcham picked up 20 points.
