Wokingham II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 20 May 2006 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Thatcham II’s put in a disappointing performance but still managed to salvage a draw against their counterparts at Wokingham on Saturday.
Having put the opposition in Thatcham’s opening bowlers Tim Mahoney and Simon Rider, on debut, bowled very well in helpful conditions and it was the latter who broke through, bowling Neate to leave the home side 15-1 after 9 overs.
Unfortunately this was the last wicket to fall for 31 overs as Bruwitt and Deen stamped their authority on the game. Mahoney was unlucky to see Deen missed on 24, a difficult chance running back from point. Although the rest of the Thatcham bowlers toiled manfully they were unable to create any further chances.
Both batsmen passed fifty and took their partnership to 143 when Bruwitt (68) smashed a long hop from John Williams straight at Rider at square leg, who clung on to the rebound as the ball dropped behind his legs. Hayter contributed a quick 22 before he became Rider’s second wicket and Deen completed his 100, having been missed again on 98, before he fell to Williams (2-58) for 102.
There was time for Rider (3-38) to collect his third wicket before Bruwitt went for the attacking option and declared the Wokingham innings after 50 overs on 222-5.
Thatcham’s reply could hardly have started better as Nick Shea and Chris Barnes took advantage of a close in field to send the ball to the boundary. Shea was particularly harsh on the left arm spin of McDonald, smashing his first four overs for 30. However, the introduction of Skow, with the new ball, saw him bowl his fellow Australian for 32 and when Daniel Stone followed for 0 in the very next over Wokingham were back on top.
Barnes reached 18 when he chipped Budd to point and Keep followed quickly afterwards for 1. Stephen Bird then had to retire hurt with a torn tendon in his left arm and when Fraser was bowled not offering a stroke and Williams went immediately after Thatcham were reeling on 62-6, effectively 7.
Rider and Mahoney, having been Thatcham’s best bowlers, now showed themselves to be the best batsmen too. First they consolidated and then started to pick up some valuable runs and although the win was beyond the visitors there were still bonus points to be had. They added 69 before the reintroduction of Budd brought the end for Rider, well caught behind for 34. Skipper Perry Moore fell first ball but Jamie Bishop stayed with Mahoney for 3 overs but when he was bowled by Skow Bird had to return to the crease with 7 overs still to be bowled. The experienced pair managed to hold on though, Bird blocking everything despite being in obvious pain and Mahoney picking up a few more runs to take Thatcham past 150. The evergreen Lambourn man finished on 37 not out and Bird on 8 with Skow and Budd sharing all nine wickets, taking 5-25 and 4-47 respectively from 16 overs each.
