Match report Thatcham 2nd Xi suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Royal Ascot after skipper Perry Moore had won the toss and elected to bat on a baking hot afternoon.
Openers Ian Cottingham and Malcolm Bloor walked to the wicket with a backdrop of the magnificent new stand at Ascot and found runs hard to come by . However by grit and determination the openers posted a three figure opening stand until Cottingham fell to a fine catch for (53). Dan Stone(42) immediately gave the run rate a much needed boost. Bloor fell for a painstaking (55) which led to a mini collapse in the chase for quick runs, Sean huckins then showed he has lost none of his attacking prowess as he smashed an unbeaten (51) from 27 balls to take the total to 234-7 from 52 overs. J.Summers 3-67 and M.Davies 3-19 being the chief wicket takers for the home side.

Jamie Bishop (1-46) and Tim Mahoney took the old ball in search of a breakthrough,At 47-2 the games was evenly placed, but with the taking of the new ball the game began to slip away from Thatcham as the home skipper Sweeman (80) made light work of any loose balls supported by Carr (72) the home side began to cruiseto a comfortable victory , but once Moore 1-25 had removed Sweetman the home side wobbled against a rejuventated Paul Jenkins 1-48 and the wileyTim Mahoney 3-64, the pick of Thatcham’s bowling attack.
But an edged boundary eventually saw the home side to victory by 4 wickets with an over to spare.
Despite defeat Thatcham 2nds picked up a useful 13 points and are still well placed in 3rd position for promotion.
