Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Odiham & Greywell on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 3 wickets
Match report
Thatcham 2nd XI got back to winning ways against a spirited Odiham & Greywell 1st XI at Brownsfield on Saturday after their lacklustre defeat the previous week. At the toss an unusually green looking but hard and pacy wicket faced both captains and after Odiham's captain called incorrectly Thatcham's skipper Perry Moore had no hesitation in asking Odiham to bat.
Thatcham's bowling attack opened up with pace and youth of Paul Jenkins along with the guile and experience of Tim Mahoney. It was Mahoney who immediately broke through in his first over, Turner playing a loose shot skying the ball to mid-off where Moore took an excellent catch, thus setting the tone for Thatcham's fielding. The pace of Jenkins was proving a handful for Odiham, with Fitzer having the top of his off-stump hit 3 overs latter, at 8 for 2 Odiham were struggling. Worse was to follow for the visitors, as the unlucky Docis clipped the ball behind square of Mahoney where the diving Iain Cottingham took an one handed catch to the equal delight and amazement of his team mates. Rowe soon followed attempting to hook Jenkins and was caught by Stephen Bird, after his initial spell Jenkins was replaced by newcomer James Fisher who had skipper Voissey caught behind then Fisher took an amazing one handed slip catch to dismiss Steven, at 38-6 Odiham were facing a quick defeat.
Green (55) and McGaughrin (57) had no choice to steady the ship, Green taking 23 balls to get off the mark, whilst Mahoney finished his miserly spell of 11-5-16-3. The 2 Odiham batsman playing with great care and increasing confidence hitting any loose balls to the boundary and with aggressive running proceeded to build an impressive 120 stand for the 7th wicket. The introduction of debutant Nathan Redmond broke the stand, bowling straight, clean bowling both batsman in the space of 3 balls, finishing with 5.2-0-28-3 with some late blows Odiham innings closed on 177 in the 52 over, with the impressive Jenkins taking 13-3-44-3. At tea Thatcham felt confident of reaching Odiham's total if not slightly disappointed in not having to chase a lower score.
Thatcham's openers Cottingham and Daniel Stone (instead of Bird who had injured his back whilst keeping) strode to the wicket knowing that the run rate to achieve victory would not be a problem but key to chasing down the target would be not to lose early wickets. Unfortunately Stone (0) driving at Steven was caught in the 3rd over, Jenkins (12) after 3 fours was bowled by a beauty from Green. The new ball was moving off the seam with Cottingham (35) determined to hit anything off line with 8 fours to the boundary until he edged a drive to slip.
At 50-3 Sean Huckins (43) and Bird (28) then proceeded to rebuild the innings with watchful defence and attacking any loose bowling, 3 successive Huckins 4's dismissed Green from the attack, but with 50 runs required for victory Huckins was then caught amazingly over his shoulder by Steven at deep mid off and Bird soon followed. It was then left to Fisher (29) and Bishop (7) to take Thatcham within sight of victory, 2 more loose shots left skipper Moore to guide the ball down to 3rd man for a 3 wicket victory. The game was played in a great spirit, credit to Odiham for making a determined effort to push Thatcham all the way after their awful start, Thatcham taking a great deal of positives out of the game, not least the performance with the ball of youngsters Redmond, Jenkins and Williams, though their batsman will be disappointed that none of their starts were turned into scores of 50+.
The 20 points leaves Thatcham 3rd in the table, 1 point behind 2nd at the half way stage of the season with a trip to Marlow this forthcoming Saturday.
