Harefield II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Thatcham Town 2’s continued their quest for promotion to the 2nd division of the Thames Valley League after a convincing 8 wicket win away to an out of form Harefield side.
After winning the toss Thatcham skipper Perry Moore had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat on a wicket that appeared to offer a little bit to the bowlers. Early inroads were required by the Thatcham opening pair and the first wicket came in the third over as Christelow was bowled for 1. Harefield looked to settle down and form a partnership but Jamie Bishop put an end to this, taking the second wicket, clean bowling Evans for 17. Taylor came in and was instantly positive scoring his first 30 runs in boundaries, however at the other end Thatcham continued taking wickets with Moore removing Metcalfe, helped by a great diving catch from Simon Rider. This bought the Harefield skipper to the crease who began to take the attack to the Thatcham bowlers, looking to rotate the strike with the occasional boundary. As runs began to slow Taylor, out of frustration, needlessly attempted a quick single and was run out just four short of a half century. Tim Mahoney quickly removed Thompson for 0 two balls later and at 111-5 with 20 overs to go, Thatcham sensed a quick finish to the innings. However Prentice and Collett continued on adding 96 for the 6th wicket until Prentice holed out to Nathan Redmond at long-on. Collett pressed for further runs, putting away the loose deliveries as Harefield pushed for 220. Some inexperienced death bowling and tired fielding gifted some extra runs but at tea Thatcham seemed the happier side having kept Harefield down to a modest 222-6 off their allotted 52 overs. The Harefield wickets were shared around with Jenkins (2-46), Moore (1-55), Mahoney (1-39) and Bishop (1-29) the bowlers on target for Thatcham.
Needing around 4.5 an over, Thatcham looked to be positive from the first ball with the opening pair of Gavin MacDonald and Iain Cottingham adding 28 for the first wicket in just 5 overs. However MacDonald was somewhat unfortunate to lose his wicket to a ball that climbed sharply on him. Having departed for a quick fire 21 off 16 balls the fall of MacDonald bought the in form Dan Stone to the crease. The Pair of Stone and Cottingham consolidated for 10 overs as both set themselves for the duration. Harefield tried everything to remove either batsmen but the constant bowling changing favoured the two batsmen as none of the Harefield attack appeared settled. This provided Stone and Cottingham with the opportunity to cash in and both reach half centuries, Stone the first to do so off 59 balls with Cottingham following suit 3 overs later. At drinks Thatcham were in a strong position but neither batsmen let the tempo drop as the 150 quickly came up. Stone continued on his way passing through the 80’s, and getting ever closer to his first century for Thatcham. Stone duly completed his 100 off 99 balls showing few nerves as he confidently lifted the ball back over the bowlers head for his 19th boundary. Cottingham kept positive at the other end putting the ball away with great authority. With just 14 runs remaining Stone felt only three balls were required and with the first two deliveries disappearing to the boundary it looked set. However the urge to win with a maximum brought about the undoing of Stone as he was bowled for a fine, and career best, 109. It was a shame for Stone as he had looked in complete control throughout his innings, but it was his partner Cottingham who completed the game in the following over pushing the ball through point for 1. It was a chase based on two big performances with Stone making 109 and Cottingham 82 not out.
With Hillingdon Manor narrowly beating promotion rivals Maidenhead & Bray, Thatcham moved into 2nd in division 3 with a safety margin of 11 points. Next weeks visit of Chiswick & Latymer has its threats but is still a must win game for Thatcham.
