Match report Thatcham, chasing 25 points to remain in the promotion pack, decided to bat first on a green looking wicket. Iain Cottingham (1) returning from a two week lay off was caught, once again, on the square leg boundary attempting a hook shot off the rapid Sweetman. Stephen Bird however adapted to the inclement conditions much better and was unlucky to tickle one to the keeper and departed for a workman like 23. Young guns Paul Jenkins (11) and Nick Shea (16) set about the Ascot attack for 5 minutes before both found themselves back in the pavilion watching England do something similar. After Sean Huckins (10) was bowled by Pringle, Robb Fraser and Simon Rider consolidated with a 56 run partnership before Rider (15) was caught sweeping. Raheel Zaman (0) came and went and when Fraser (42) chipped one to silly mid off Thatcham innings effectively ended, All out for 140. Summers the pick of the Ascot bowlers with 5-43.

Ascot had 47 overs to chase down Thatcham’s score. After a second delay for rain both sides took the field, Royal Ascot 30-0 after 7 overs, at 6.00pm. Further hostile bowling from Zaman accounted for King and Harding and when Mahoney dismissed Davies Ascot were wobbling at 90-3. Despite Fraser and Steve Bird’s fighting spirits Thatcham were unable to inflict any further damage and Ascot romped home in 24 overs with their skipper Sweetman 61 not out off 33 balls.

Time has been called on Thatcham’s promotion hopes however a win away to Odiham this week could secure third place. Great!
